Abstract/Notes: Pam Shanks describes the stages in the child's development of language and reminds us that the Montessori principle of observation should guide the support of the child with articulation errors. For most children with developmental articulation delays, the directress can implement Montessori materials and use conversational strategies to emphasize the correct pronunciation of sounds. The clear, succinct, and easy to understand examples make this article valuable to teachers and parents especially of children under six. Abstract/Notes: "The children who demand more attention than others, who are disruptive, unmotivated, oppositional, aggressive, or do not give us the positive feedback we get from others…This is where we dig in and find compassion, and understanding, and the knowledge that no child wants to be disruptive, oppositional, or aggressive. They do this because they are hurt, and we are here to help." Sarah Werner Andrews provides an approach to the children who pose a challenge because they themselves are facing challenges. She offers practical tools and approaches that are first based on positive relationships, then on the relationship with the environment, and finally on positive, collaborative interventions. Abstract/Notes: Alison Awes provides a comprehensive review of the literature from the most current recommendations of the National Reading Panel to create a detailed description of dyslexia as she emphasizes the positive qualities of the children with this language disorder. Awes provides an expansive explanation of the Montessori method and the ways in which the Montessori materials can support the dyslexic child. When early diagnosis and intervention is partnered with an attentive guide and appropriate accommodations, the dyslexic learner can become a successful reader and learner through life. Abstract/Notes: With delicate literary style and allusions, Louise Chawla combines her ecological research and Montessori background to portray the unfolding of childhood in natural places. Starting with "enchantment with the world" as the basis for nature education for the child under six, the article suggests that the "loose parts" in the landscape that children manipulate and use result in optimal creative involvement. The act of finding favorite places in all weather, combined with the companionship of an adult role model, leads to a lifelong appreciation, concern, and activism for the natural world.
