Gender and Interactions of Children During Free Play in a Montessori Preprimary Classroom
Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses
See More
Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to add to the existing knowledge concerning interactions in preprimary settings, especially Montessori settings, based on gender. It investigated the play behaviors of boys and girls within the Montessori classroom and interactions among children and their playmates and adults during free play. This case study was based on quantitative and descriptive data. Time sampling was used to collect data on the interactions of boys and girls within the Montessori free play context. Note was made of the areas in which children played, the materials they used, and their play behaviors. Running records were used to gather information on the interactions between children and their playmates, and adults in the classroom. The gender groupings of children approached for play and behaviors with chosen playmates were noted. The number of interactions with adults, whether children or adults initiated those interactions and the behaviors of children during interactions with adults were recorded and analyzed. Findings of this study suggest that, within the Montessori classroom observed there were both similarities and differences in the free play behaviors of preprimary girls and boys. However, there were many individual differences among boys and among girls. As a result, it was sometimes impossible to make generalizations concerning the gender typing of behaviors.

Effects of Mindfulness Strategies on Student Self-Regulation Skills in Primary and Elementary Students
Available from: St. Catherine University
See More
Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mindfulness-based interventions, such as the MindUP curriculum and Exercises of Practical Life, on primary and elementary aged students’ self-regulation skills. This study consisted of a sample size of 38 students from three different Montessori environments. The data was collected over a period of four weeks using a pre and post parent assessment, observational field notes and tally sheets, and a behavioral student self-assessment tool. Results show a connection between the mindfulness interventions implemented and the children’s ability to self-regulate their behaviors and emotions. The data shows positive effects on student self-regulatory skills and it can be integrated into the classroom to facilitate student academic achievement. Our recommendation for future research is to allow for more time to conduct the study.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this action research was to decide if conducting guided reading instruction three times a week in a primary Montessori classroom would make an impact on reading levels among kindergarten students. The research took place over six weeks in a public Montessori school. The school is a Title One school located in a rural area of South Carolina. The population who participated in the study were 26 kindergarten students aged five to six from three different classrooms. Our intervention included using a variety of reading strategies such as pointing to each word, using picture clues, sounding out words, and recognizing sight words. Each session lasted around 45 minutes to an hour. Some positive effects of our study were an increase in reading confidence, usage of reading strategies, and overall reading achievement. To expand on our research, we would experiment with implementing this practice at another time during the school day and use additional guided reading techniques.

Becoming and Belonging: The Effect of the Lessons of Grace and Courtesy on Peer Reverence in a Montessori Primary Environment
Available from: St. Catherine University
See More
Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this action research project is to determine the effect of the lessons of Grace and Courtesy on children's peer reverence in a Montessori primary (ages 3-6) environment. This research study was conducted at a private Montessori School in a midwestern suburb. The four-week study was completed in a Primary Montessori environment with 13 children, ranging in age from three to six years old. During the study, data was collected on behaviors related to peer reverence and the lessons Grace and Courtesy. Data was also collected on the collective attitude, as observed and reflected on, by the adult. Data from the study showed that the use of the lessons of Grace and Courtesy correlated to the decrease in number of undesired behaviors and increase in number of desired behaviors related to peer reverence. Further study could include the effect of lessons of Grace and Courtesy on conflict resolution; the effect of the lessons of Grace and Courtesy on social skills; the effect of daily repetition of the same lesson of Grace and Courtesy; the use of cards to follow-up on the lessons of Grace and Courtesy; and the use of the lessons of Grace and Courtesy outside a Montessori environment.
