Abstract/Notes: Other years, after a bumpy start, this quote leaves me feeling discouraged as I reflect on the ways I may be hindering my students' developing independence, or missing opportunities to create the "felt safety" (a term I learned from Colleen Wilkinson) necessary for my students to own their learning. In their guide Toxic Stress, the Harvard University Center on the Developing Child describes three kinds of stress responses: * Positive stress response: a normal part of healthy development, marked by brief heart rate and hormone level increases-can be brought on by scenarios like the first day of school or getting a shot at the doctor. * Tolerable stress response: due to events like the loss of a loved one, a natural disaster, or a major injury, this stress response activates the body's alert systems further. For children who have not had adults to offer them love and support during this pandemic, the stress of closed schools and shelter-in-place orders may lead to a toxic stress response.
