Abstract/Notes: Learning itself involves a constant flux of perceptions and ideas, and this may cause children to feel vulnerable, with emotional swings from joy to anxiety. [...]with a bit of trust, planning, and preparation-and a dose of positive attitude-change can be the force that moves our natural spiritual energy forward into a life of learning. Show enthusiasm, smile often, build authentic relationships with all your students, get to know them as unique individuals, take them outside, incorporate diverse music into your class, avoid unhelpful criticism, and take time for yourself to reflect.

Abstract/Notes: Recent efforts to define qualities of effective teaching practice have done little to capture the role of play, imagination, and creativity in classroom teaching. Drawing on theories of play and data from a two-year case study that included classroom observations, interviews, artifact collection, and surveys, the author examines the ways in which elements of play were present across the practice of eight novice middle grades teachers. Building on examples of play in these classrooms, the author proposes adding the dimension of play to frameworks of middle grades teaching—a dimension that encompasses young adolescents' engagement in classroom work that involves choice and self-direction, imaginative creations, and a nonstressed state of interest and joy.

Abstract/Notes: Children’s future successes depend on developing the abilities to innovate, be resilient in the face of their mistakes, problem-solve creatively, and collaborate with peers effectively. However, standard American educational practices—stressing memorization, grades, and testing—are failing to foster these skills. There is one complete system of education that effectively supports the natural development of such essential abilities: Montessori. Montessori education expert Paula Lillard Preschlack offers a clear explanation of how the Montessori approach helps children. By looking closely at authentic Montessori practices, she shows the tight correlation between the Montessori system in action and children practicing and strengthening the very traits they will need for adulthood. When implemented properly, Montessori can ensure positive outcomes for generations of children—The Montessori Potential shows exactly how this is done in private and public schools, and at home.
