Abstract/Notes: Susan David's teeter-totter principle embodies finding a balance between comfort and challenge in order to live a fulfilling life (pp. 166, 174)2: "We get to that zone of optimal development in a very specific way: when we live at the edge of our ability, a place in which we're not overcompetent or complacent, but also not in so far over our heads that we're overwhelmed. . In our relationships, creative lives, personal development, and work, we can promote this advancement in two ways-expanding our breadth (what we do: the skills we acquire, the topics we talk about, the avenues we explore) and our depth (how well we do what we do: the quality of our listening, our level of engagement with the world). Incorrect conceptions of race as a social construct (as opposed to a power construct), of racial history as a singular march of racial progress (as opposed to a duel of antiracist and racist progress), of the race problem as rooted in ignorance and hate (as opposed to powerful self-interest)-all come together to produce solutions bound to fail. .

Abstract/Notes: This section includes a selection of Maria Montessori’s key writings that reflect the broad range of her body of work and that represent ideas that are fundamental for Montessori education today. Her writings are multifaceted and sometimes challenging for today’s readers because they contain philosophical expositions, almost arcane vocabulary, and even references to biblical texts. In this section, the chapter sequence is generally organized by year of first publication to follow the evolution of Montessori’s scholarly work.

Abstract/Notes: Methods Must Be Adapted to Individual Needs Is Discovery That Has Made Italian Dotoressa World Famous -- the Beginning and Development of Her Work Described by Miss Ellen Yale Stevens. "What is the the Montessori method? It is the playhouse school, the school where the rudiments of work-a-day knowledge seep into the juvenile brain; the school in which educators from one end of the world to the other have been interested and which, wherever its principles have been carried, has remained as the initial step in an epoch of child development."
