The Effects of High Stakes Testing on Teaching Methodologies

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: High stakes testing, in the form of annual standardized state assessments, affects the teaching methodologies of public school teachers (Passman, 2001). This study sought to examine whether teachers prepare students for high stakes assessments by making changes in their teaching methodologies (Jerald, 2006). Thirty teachers received questionnaires containing agreement statements and short open-ended questions about the effects of high stakes testing on how and what they teach. Eight participants were also interviewed to gain greater insight into their opinions on the effects of high stakes tests. Triangulation was used to authenticate the responses and draw conclusions (Hendricks, 2009). The results of the study indicated that some teachers have adapted their teaching methodologies to mirror test structures even if the subject they teach was not included on standardized state tests.

Doctoral Dissertation

Learning Processes of Highly Gifted Children in the Free Work of the Montessori Method - an Empirical Analysis on the Basis of Individual Case Studies in Montessori Primary Schools

Abstract/Notes: The beginnings of the dissertation by Esther Grindel, holder of the Montessori diploma and former assistant at the Montessori Centre, also date back to this time. The survey analyses in an empirical way how and under which conditions highly gifted primary school children can learn according to their individual competencies and needs in the periods of Free Work, which is a characteristic way of learning in the Montessori Method. On the basis of four descriptive case studies of highly gifted students of a Montessori primary school typical structures of their ways of learning during the Montessori Free Work are investigated in a comparative analysis. The results, which are discussed in the context of current findings of the research on high abilities, are of great interest to both the Montessori schools and for the fostering at regular schools. A publication of the work as part of the series “Impulses of New Education” is in preparation.

Abstract/Notes: Clark Montessori Junior and Senior High School was the first public Montessori high school in the US. Marta Donahoe and Dean Blase outline the roots and founding principles of Clark Montessori in the context of Montessori pedagogy. Woven throughout this discussion of the Montessori high school environment are guiding principles that Clark adopted including respect for each other and the environment and collaboration of all in the service of students to achieve a sense of social responsibility. This is partially achieved through the foundation and continuation of Cosmic Education in the elementary years. She concludes with fundamental principles specifically for the Montessori high school.
