Abstract/Notes: "The most essential component to offering the children an education for peace is the emphasis on that which unites us." With this focus, Elizabeth Henke presents a picture of how Montessori students progressively develop a sense of moral, civic, and social responsibility. The foundation is set during the elementary years when children gain an understanding of the interconnectedness of all life and the commonalities between all people through Cosmic Education. The morality developed in elementary is refined during adolescence and is aided by coursework that is focused on current ethical issues and opportunities to participate in their school, local, and global communities. As they begin to place themselves into the world by thinking of themselves as citizens of their community and components of culture, their work for the betterment of that world gains relevance. Toward the Ultimate Goal of Peace: How a Montessori Education at the High School Level Supports Moral Development through Study and Community Life

Abstract/Notes: This paper is the synthesis of Elizabeth Henke's four years of work from 2009-2013: three years at the high school and one year at the University for Peace. She summarizes, "A Montessori high school education should reveal to the adolescent a pathway to peace that is built on positive human relations and should provide opportunities for contributions to the community that result in experiences of valorization. The organizing principles of the universe and society are revealed in the core of each discipline, and a moral framework emerges before the adolescent when disciplines are explored with the help of experts." This is the first Montessori document that attempts to directly derive moral essentials from teacher interviews about formal high school disciplines that develop peaceful communication and action and bring an understanding of peace theory to students at the Montessori High School at University Circle, in Cleveland, OH.

Abstract/Notes: The developing human being creates a narrative capacity at each stage of development. Elise Huneke-Stone highlights the role of the human tendencies and the fundamental characteristics of childhood and adolescence for self-construction, as she explores the ways in which an increasingly digital environment affects this process. She reminds us that children become what they experience, and offering developmentally appropriate experiences in the digital world - at the right time - helps those children and adolescents adapt to their culture and tell their own story.
