Abstract/Notes: [...]we may minimize children's feelings or attempt to protect them from disappointment. Adapt the style or phrasing to suit your child's age. * Listen to your child as he or she talks, offering feedback such as: "Oh..."; "Mmm..."; "I see." * Recognize and name your child's feelings: "You seem upset (or angry, or happy).." * Resist asking and then answering questions that are rhetorical or accusatory: "What were you thinking?" "Who drank the milk?" "How many times have I told you .?" * Try to understand from your child's perspective and describe, perhaps with fantasy: "Sounds like you wish you could eat cookies for every meal." * Show respect for your child's struggle: "I see that it's hard for you to." * Describe the dilemma your child is facing: "Even though you know. Use a word or short description, rather than a nagging, repetitive demand: "Shoes, backpack ." * Write a note: "I'm hungry" on the dog's collar or "Hang me up!" on the jacket. * Take action without insulting: "Let's clean up, put the paints away, and go outside."

Abstract/Notes: Often people only experience culture shock when traveling to a new country, but for me, every day after elementary school, when I stepped across our front stoop back into my home, I entered a different world. The smell was the first thing to hit me: the dryer vent pumping out the smell of Downy in a futile battle against the aroma of fermented cabbage (like vinegar and musty wine); next, I'd hear the television playing the latest Korean drama my mom had picked up on VHS from the Korean grocery store 40 minutes away. Again, in this hyphenated duality of confidence and fear, I see the ways in which Montessori education has been a vehicle to offer this Korean-American student a sense of belonging, while also revealing an opportunity for the Montessori community to grow and to cultivate the vulnerability to speak above a whisper our most deepest thoughts and feelings. Abstract/Notes: At the heart of Maria Montessori's philosophy is the idea of providing the child with the most supportive environment in which to develop one's potential, for the singular purpose of carrying out one's cosmic task. Montessori teachers everywhere dedicate their energies to participating in this endeavor. But do these same teachers take time to realize that they, too, are on the same journey, developing their own potential and discovering the ways they choose to carry out their cosmic task? It is one thing to believe in the cosmic task; it is another to feel the pull and then experience the fact that there is so much more they each can do. "Education should no longer be mostly imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities" (Montessori, 1974, p. 2). In this article, the authors share their story of mission outreach in the Philippines. Their work was inspired by Sister Christina Marie Trudeau and her mission education program at Chaminade University of Honolulu. This is the story of how the authors found themselves on an unexpected mission, experiencing the life-changing effects of making a difference, realizing a commitment to service, and investing in the cosmic task.
