Abstract/Notes: Gerard Leonard maps the child's increasingly global environment and sense of citizenship from elementary to adolescence. For the elementary child, an orientation to the local history and geography of their surroundings provides a framework for understanding geography. In Leonard's words, "We have to know and understand a lot about many different places and people so we can adapt easily wherever we go." Montessori understood that by grounding children in the natural world they will have "a deep feeling for the interdependencies of nature" (Leonard). From this global sense of the cosmic interaction of all life on earth springs an understanding of human interdependencies that enhances one's own sense of belonging to place and to the procession of life. The elementary child needs two environments, both the school and the world beyond, "the world of nature and the society of his particular region and country" (Leonard). The adolescent studies his local place, the town, the county, and the bioregion finding security and community awareness by experiencing engaged living through real work in the local community. This grounding combined with the study of other languages, cultures, and religions is the key to understanding the global society. Abstract/Notes: On 6 May 2022, 70 years after Maria Montessori’s death, Stockholm University and the Department of Education and Didactics organized an international Montessori symposium. The idea was to present a breadth of research on Maria Montessori. The symposium dealt with Maria Montessori in the interwar period, an analysis of the history of ideas. Another presentation suggested possible research models to study this large field. The symposium also presented interpretations of Montessori’s writings that point her out as a visionary and pioneer in education for a sustainable world. An additional research area addressed was the potential of neuroscience to examine the effects of teaching theory and learning in Montessori education. Finally, this report describes a study on whether Montessori-inspired education compared to traditional education stands up in areas of socio-economic disadvantage.

A Critical Social Psychological Contribution to (Global) Citizenship Education: Seeing Oneself Through the Eyes of the 'Other'

Abstract/Notes: Taylor (2004) argues that the Western moral order is characterised by three key forms — the market economy, public sphere, and self-governance. These forms entail contradictory tendencies for the concept of selfhood and our relations with each other. We do endorse an autonomous and free self, who should pursue her goals, but is also expected to act ethically towards others through mutuality, equality, and collectivity. However, we are concerned with being authentic, i.e. being true to ‘ourselves’, as well as with recognising the needs and differences of the ‘other’. This moral order is based on notions of political equality, democracy, freedom, human rights, and privatised economic prosperity. Moving ‘with Holzkamp beyond Holzkamp’ (Teo, 2016), in this paper, we present a method to foster the skill to step out from one’s moral matrix, the invisible normalised moral order, and view oneself through the eyes of the ‘other’. Focusing on food practices, we developed a method for social self-clarification (Holzkamp, 1995). The skill to see oneself through the eyes of the ‘other’ is necessary in realising one’s entanglement in a global institutional order that foreseeably and avoidably produces severe inequalities.
