Abstract/Notes: Describes one teacher's approach to process writing, a mainstay for Montessori adolescent classrooms. The premise of the method is that everyone has the natural potential to write and that the emergence of the inner voice must be nurtured by extended conferencing and revision combined with taking risks, experimenting, and continually revising. Includes samples of students' writing in progress. (Author/TJQ)

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s work discussed in the chapter, The Child, Society and The World – Unpublished Speeches and Writings, is based on her original speeches between 1930 and 1950. The writings cover a wide range of topics organized into six sections. Two sections speak directly to parents and teachers, urging them to respect children’s interests and occupations which allows them to build concentration and develop self-discipline. Another section considers diverse topics including social education, religious education, fantasy and fairy tales, and Montessori’s lesson on silence. The last section of the chapter outlines Montessori’s ultimate pedagogical aim: a new and better world achieved through the child based on what Montessori describes as cosmic education.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s works discussed in this chapter are, Education for a New World (1946), To Educate the Human Potential (1948), and The Formation of Man (1955). Like many of her texts, these publications are based on transcriptions of lectures held in various settings including teacher training courses. These three books were written during and after the tragic disruptions caused by WWII and were published first in India. They are among Montessori's last texts in which she highlights cosmic education and expresses her conviction of the need for a global reconstruction that must necessarily begin with childhood.

Abstract/Notes: This section includes a selection of Maria Montessori’s key writings that reflect the broad range of her body of work and that represent ideas that are fundamental for Montessori education today. Her writings are multifaceted and sometimes challenging for today’s readers because they contain philosophical expositions, almost arcane vocabulary, and even references to biblical texts. In this section, the chapter sequence is generally organized by year of first publication to follow the evolution of Montessori’s scholarly work.

Available from: Library and Archives Canada

Comparative education, Literacy, Montessori method of education, Writing - Instruction and study

Abstract/Notes: This study was conducted to discover whether Chinese children would go through a similar process of building their theories of print as their English-speaking peers, and whether different schooling (traditional Chinese schooling and Montessori schooling) in the same cultural context affect children's literacy development in different ways. 79 children of age four and age five respectively from one traditional school and one Montessori school were participated in the study. This study found that there were similarities in the early phases of reading and writing development between two languages, Chinese and English. Children from different schooling systems in the same cultural context showed different developmental performance in these tasks indicating that different schooling may have different impacts on children's development of reading and writing. Children from traditional Chinese kindergarten performed better than those from Montessori school in both tasks.
