Abstract/Notes: This article reflects how to know about Montessori pedagogy and the process she followed to build it, can help future teachers to be reflective and innovative. The aim is not to suggest that student teachers should know the pedagogy of Montessori, nor that of any specific pedagogue, and to put it into practice or imitate it, without further ado. Educational literature agrees that an educational system will be as good as its teachers, and they will not be able to improve education if they simply apply methods designed by others in an uncritical and decontextualized way. After describing how Montessori came to propose her method and establish her pedagogical principles, the importance of linking theory and practice in the initial and permanent training of future teachers is underlined.

Abstract/Notes: This study aims to determine the effects Practical Life activities have on the process of normalization of students in a Montessori primary classroom. The research took place over six weeks and included 22 participants. Each day the participants were given Practical Life lessons, such as dry pouring, rolling up a work mat, walking around the ellipse, etc. Students who can concentrate and work freely in the Montessori classroom are moving toward normalization. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected to examine the effects of how Practical Life activities assist the process of normalization of children ages 3-6. Findings suggest that given that students are given Practical Life activities, it is proven to help guide the normalization of the children in the Montessori classroom. When the children are self-regulated and deeply engaged in their work, they are normalized. Keywords: Practical Life, normalization, concentration, self-regulation.

Increasing Concentration Through Multistep Practical Life Works in a Montessori 2-6 Classroom

Available from: St. Catherine University

Abstract/Notes: This intervention was intended to combat apathy and disengagement in a preschool Montessori classroom. Four traditional Practical Life tasks were introduced to 15 students, dusting the shelves, sweeping the floor, carpet sweeping, and mopping the floor. These tasks required many different types of movement to complete. The intention was to test Dr. Montessori’s assertions that movement is essential for early brain development. The research took place in an urban Montessori and included 15 participants. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected over a four-week period. At the end of the intervention, findings indicated that their ability to concentrate increased after the children engaged in the four tasks. After given the opportunity for both small and large motor movement, children are able to work independently with a greater success rate.

The Tension Between Teacher Control and Children's Freedom in a Child-Centered Classroom: Resolving the Practical Dilemma Through a Closer Look at the Related Theories

Abstract/Notes: This article explores the meaning of child-centeredness in Early Childhood Education (ECE), by shedding light on the nuanced tensions between teacher control and children’s freedom. While ECE professionals advocate the importance of children’s individual interests and needs in education, they diverge somewhat in their perspectives about the teacher’s role in education. This article manifests and tries to resolve this teaching dilemma through incorporating the related theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey, and Montessori) upholding and encompassing child-centeredness. The author contends that high teacher control and high children’s freedom are not exclusive of one another: children’s freedom is defined in an active way, as freedom to participate, rather than in a passive way, as freedom from any constrains. The paper concludes with a metaphor of “impressionist painting”, which may offer some insights helpful to those who have struggled with the tension between teacher control and children’s freedom in the context of progressive and critical pedagogy.
