Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was a scientifically minded leader of an international reform movement. This chapter traces her life and legacy during a period of deep social and political unrest. As a public intellectual in inter-war Europe, Montessori delivered a cultural critique which drew inspiration from many sources including feminism, pacifism, evolutionary biology, and psychology. Her radically innovative field-tested pedagogy, with its prepared environment and interactive materials, shifted focus from the teacher to the learner, thus challenging established notions of childhood and schooling. Montessori was convinced that she had formulated the definitive, scientific method of child-rearing, which made her unwilling to accept any modifications. This attitude led to many schisms within the Montessori movement. In the long run, however, it was the internationalism, humanism and pacifism of Montessori education which secured the vitality of its legacy, and its relevance for us today.

Abstract/Notes: The pedagogy Maria Montessori developed is based on the four phases of development which she theorized consisted of a series of four 6-year periods beginning at birth. The chapters in this section are organized around these phases, or what Montessori termed planes, of development. The chapters include a discussion of the developmental needs Montessori identified for each level and how her pedagogy uniquely addresses these needs at the Infant/Toddler, Preschool, Elementary, and Adolescent levels. The section begins with a chapter discussing the Montessori environment across the phases of development and ends with a chapter on preparation of the teacher.

Abstract/Notes: This paper is the synthesis of Elizabeth Henke's four years of work from 2009-2013: three years at the high school and one year at the University for Peace. She summarizes, "A Montessori high school education should reveal to the adolescent a pathway to peace that is built on positive human relations and should provide opportunities for contributions to the community that result in experiences of valorization. The organizing principles of the universe and society are revealed in the core of each discipline, and a moral framework emerges before the adolescent when disciplines are explored with the help of experts." This is the first Montessori document that attempts to directly derive moral essentials from teacher interviews about formal high school disciplines that develop peaceful communication and action and bring an understanding of peace theory to students at the Montessori High School at University Circle, in Cleveland, OH.
