Abstract/Notes: This qualitative study explored the phenomenon of what happened as Florida's high-stakes accountability system intersected with a beginning and veteran teachers' life histories and different stocks of lifeworldly knowledge at demographically different lifeworld communities. Habermas' (1987) theory of communicative action was used as the theoretical framework to explore what the teachers' responses meant for learners and teaching practice. The research purpose of this study (emphasizing an interpretive approach) sought to gain insights and understandings regarding the phenomenon specifically. The practical purpose (according to critical theory) was to then use the insights gained (enlightenment) in order to contemplate the kinds of steering media and mechanisms needed to support teaching practice (emancipation) that can best satisfy the system (accountability) rationale to increase educational opportunities for all learners regardless of need. Three overarching themes central to learners and teaching practice emerged from the data obtained from interviews, classroom observations, and student products: (a) the greater the lifeworld needs of the school community (e.g., high mobility rate, low socio-economic status) the greater the response in terms of instructional and curricular accommodations designed to increase FCAT test scores; (b) the greater the colonization of the lifeworld perspective by Florida's accountability system rationale, the greater the likelihood that various social actors experienced fear in relation to FCAT; and (c) school reform efforts both past and present (including Florida's high-stakes accountability system) have consistently resulted in less educational opportunity for those learners who need it the most.

Abstract/Notes: This study was needed because there was not a lot of knowledge available about Montessori pedagogy, parents’ experiences about pedagogy and how they utilized pedagogy at home. Our partnership organization was Oulun Mon-tessori-päiväkoti (local kindergarten which follows Montessori pedagogy). They wanted to know what kind of guidance parents would like to have about Mon-tessori pedagogy. This paper reports a study on what kind of experiences parents had about Montessori pedagogy and how they applied pedagogy at home. An additional aim was to find out what kind of orientation activities parents were willing to participate in. The thesis assignment was a qualitative study. Data on experiences were col-lected using a questionnaire which included open-ended questions. Parents from our partnership kindergarten could fill in the questionnaire at home. We distributed 20 questionnaires and got back eight questionnaires for the final analysis. The theory based content analysis was used to analyze the answers. Parents reported that they had good experiences and knowledge of a child’s individual growth and need of support. They also thought that it was good for children that there were children of different ages in the group. There were parents who knew how to use pedagogy at home and parents who needed more guidance on the matter. Parents did not buy too many toys and they also made toys at home. Parents took their children with them to do things like cooking and cleaning. Children were asked to take their toys to the right places at home. Parents suggested that the kindergarten could organize workshops for parents to get more knowledge about Montessori pedagogy and to learn to utilize pedagogy better in their everyday life. Parents are interested in Montessori pedagogy but all of them are not familiar with the pedagogy. Observation of a child, children of different ages in one group and space for creativity are the main experiences which parents have about Montessori pedagogy. Parents also need some guidance concerning the application of Montessori pedagogy to everyday life.

The physical education is realized at its best when combined with different situations in daily life. Kasvattajan tehtävä on luoda oppimisympäristö liikunnallisesti suotavaksi. On tärkeää elää hetkessä oppimisympäristö huomioiden.

Abstract/Notes: In the thesis we study the visibility of good manners in children’s everyday activities within the Montessori Pedagogy frame of reference. The aim of our thesis is to study if the instructors’ objectives are realized and how good manners show in children’s everyday activities. This study was conducted using qualitative methods, we aimed to gather an in-depth understanding of the benefits of Montessori pedagogy. We collected the material by inter-viewing kindergarten teachers and video-recording children in their everyday activities at the kindergarten. The interviews were analyzed using theory-oriented content analysis and the observation matrix was created on the basis of the results of the interview analysis. The observation data were analyzed using the observation matrix. The interviews revealed the importance of adult exemplary behavior, common rules, respect for others and for the environment, settling disputes by discussing and practicing good manners. Calm behavior of the groups can easily be detected from the observations. The adult’s consistent behavior is a model for the children. Children are given time and opportunities to solve disputes by themselves. Adults are continuously observing children’s activities and helping them when needed. The children’s way to interact with each other and their daily activities often includes respect for each other in addition to supporting, advising and helping each other. Caring for the environment is commonly noticeable in the children’s daily activities. The adults aim to practice Montessori pedagogy in their daily activities and encourage the children to practice good behavior and manners. Children practice good manners sponta-neously, without the adult guidance. Especially in the presence of adults children strive to practice the learned behavior-models. Continuous quality evaluation is important when developing early childhood education. From a quality perspective it is highly important to evaluate the teacher’s activities and behaviors and their relevance when working with children. It is also advisable to ponder the significance of early childhood education for the child’s future. / Opinnäytetyössä tutkitaan hyvien käytöstapojen näkymistä lasten arjessa montessoripedagogiikan viitekehyksessä. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on selvittää, toteutuvatko ohjaajien määrittelemät kasvatustavoitteet tapakasvatuksen osalta leikkikoulun toiminnassa ja miten hyvät tavat näkyvät lasten arjen toiminnassa. Opinnäytetyön yhteistyökumppaneina ovat kaksi pääkaupunkiseudun Montessori-leikkikoulua. Opinnäytetyö on kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen tutkielma. Aineisto on kerätty haastattelemalla leikkikoulujen työntekijöitä ja havainnoimalla lapsista kuvattuja videoita heidän arkisissa toiminnoissaan. Haastatteluaineisto on analysoitu käyttäen teoriaohjaavaa sisällönanalyy-simenetelmää. Havainnointirunko on laadittu haastatteluanalyysin tulosten pohjalta. Videomateriaalin analyysin tukena on käytetty havainnointirunkoa.

Abstract/Notes: The Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle® (MIL) was implemented as the foundation of care in several assisted living memory care (ALMC) neighborhoods to enhance meaningful social roles, engagement, and focus on residents' remaining capabilities. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the outcomes regarding resident levels of engagement and prescribed antipsychotic medications before and after MIL implementation. A total of 85 residents were observed for 10-minute periods seven times during 1 day to ascertain the level of engagement during meals and planned and unplanned activities. Positive engagement minutes increased after MIL implementation for activities and meals. Outcomes of this project support the MIL as a foundation of care for ALMC residents and have raised the awareness for addressing diverse cognitive abilities. The need for reoccurring training for the sustainability of this model of care was recognized. [Journal of Gerontological Nursing, 46(5), 40–46.]
