Abstract/Notes: This chapter introduces the acceptance, growth, and sinicization, or adaptation to a Chinese context, of Montessori education in China, including its early dissemination between 1913 and1931 linked to modern education and social reformers and its revival starting in the 1980s connected to economic reform, an increasing interest in Western educational ideas and the expansion of private kindergartens. In both phases, the social and economic environments of the country had a considerable impact on the government’s consent to and the implementation of the Montessori method, with recurring concerns about the Montessori education’s emphasis on individualism and the elite associations of schools that are mostly private. Finally, the chapter concludes with China’s recent curricular reforms for young children and the current core challenge of Montessori education’s localization in China.
