Abstract/Notes: In light of the fact that Maria Montessori had just had her two major books on the Psico approach published (Psicogeometria and Psicoaritmetica) and also completed her manuscript on a psychological approach to language (Psicogrammatica), this particular lecture on language is a powerful testimony to the psychological workings and how interest in language is sparked and developed. Montessori includes samples from very young children (1-2 years) to children of six to seven years, who traditionally were viewed as being “ready” to engage with language at an abstract level, via reading and writing. Again, in this lecture Montessori shows that it is the interest in letters, and hence writing, that precedes reading.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori describes to her students on this London course how she worked with young adolescents and 10-year-olds on a poem of Italy’s greatest poet Dante. The children became fascinated with the Divine Comedy in which the poet relates of his journey through the regions of the dead—Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise. Such high and intricate literature is usually considered as far beyond young children. This poem of Dante is full of philosophy, full of references to historical events, but what the children felt was an utter communion with the spirit of the poem and the poet.

Abstract/Notes: Followers of Maria Montessori become accustomed to the oft-repeated stories that drive home a point, but here is a new treasure. This lecture tells of an experiment that Montessori began with 12- to 14-year-old children and then with 10-year-olds. When the poetry of Dante was introduced to these students, they became passionate and grew to love the "Divine Comedy." Montessori showed the students that the verses were written in threes and that each line of poetry contained eleven syllables. This linguistic understanding led to analysis and exploration using dictation, circles to mark the syllables, and ultimately to the memorization of entire cantos and performances. In this lecture, Montessori inspires us to experiment, to reach for the best, and to challenge students. The Dante experiment embraced philosophy, history, theology, and poetry and deeply touched the emotions of the children. Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s pedagogy is considered a “classics” of Education Sciences. In this contribution, a survey conducted with three different groups of subjects attending University lectures or in-service Montessori training courses is reported. Main research purpose is to discover background knowledge and perceived meanings of each group concerning the Montessori Method and its main characteristics. Data collected from the three groups under investigation are compared to identify the most macroscopic differences and / or similarities. Through the graphs produced, first reflections and conclusions are attempted, at the same time readers are invited to build their own opinions inferring other meanings or conclusions thanks to data and reading tools provided.
