Abstract/Notes: In lyrical prose, Jim Webster lays out his view on the universal human use of tools and how "humans meet the practical demands of life." Webster lauds physical work and the work of the hand as they both support engagement, social cooperation, a deepening of relationships, and sustainability. Practical work is valuable and is plentiful as it generates reciprocal community, dignity, self-awareness, and provides opportunity by giving comfort, refining skills, expressing creative insight, and imparting a sense of gratitude. Abstract/Notes: Jennifer Rogers is emerging as a polished and prolific Montessori writer, and Sacred Second is a testimony to the pen. She explains the three-period lesson and the importance of the child doing the work of the second period that is enriched by experience and exploration. The article is included in this journal simply because practical life has a very short first period of presentation and third period of the demonstration of mastery, but the second period is the heart of doing a practical task, and that is the glorious interlude of independent work of the hand.

Abstract/Notes: Maintains that moral education should be at the foundation of educational reform and that education should prepare adolescents to find their place in society. Asserts that secondary level instruction, provided in a rural neutral environment and with opportunities for adolescents to work with their hands and their minds, will help to create a more harmonious and stronger society.

Abstract/Notes: Gerard Leonard and Kathleen Allen describe a variety of nature experiences as a part of the Montessori elementary tradition, beginning with a warning about the way contemporary life constrains children’s experience of nature. Through a lyrical rendering of the nature-based expressions of children, Leonard and Allen look at a variety of approaches to nature study through the senses, the enrichment of gardening, daily journals of nature observations, poetry writing, bird watching, biographies of natural scientists, drawing, use of the microscope, and classification. Finally, they present a list of curriculum inclusions for the elementary, with concluding remarks summarizing the role and uniqueness of studying the “book of nature.” Reprinted from The NAMTA Journal 33,3 (2008, Summer): 81-97.
