Abstract/Notes: The pedagogy Maria Montessori developed is based on the four phases of development which she theorized consisted of a series of four 6-year periods beginning at birth. The chapters in this section are organized around these phases, or what Montessori termed planes, of development. The chapters include a discussion of the developmental needs Montessori identified for each level and how her pedagogy uniquely addresses these needs at the Infant/Toddler, Preschool, Elementary, and Adolescent levels. The section begins with a chapter discussing the Montessori environment across the phases of development and ends with a chapter on preparation of the teacher.

Available from: California State University, Monterey Bay

Abstract/Notes: This senior capstone explores the benefits of Montessori pedagogy for special needs students. This research collects the experiences of Montessori and special needs teachers from the San Benito area. Along with the field research, my findings have indicated the benefits of the materials and environment of a Montessori classroom for special needs students. This study shows that the integration of Montessori pedagogy for special needs students proves beneficial in their academic and emotional development and a need to recognize alternative educational styles and their benefits for special needs students. To conclude by bringing light to Montessori pedagogy as a teaching style there are many benefits for a student’s development academically and socio-emotionally.

Making Sense of Montessori Teacher Identity, Montessori Pedagogy, and Educational Policies in Public Schools

Available from: University of Kansas Libraries

Abstract/Notes: Montessori teachers in public schools navigate a system daily that often does not align with their pedagogy, and district policies push them to stray from high-fidelity implementation. Using Weick’s sensemaking theory and literature on Montessori teacher identity, I contend that Montessori teachers’ identity plays a crucial role in how, or if, they respond to educational policies that may not seemingly align with the Montessori Method. The overarching purpose of this study was to understand Montessori public school teachers’ experiences with policies that influence their pedagogy. Through qualitative interviews and a culminating group-level assessment session, three themes emerged as teachers shared their experiences with educational policies: (a) Montessori pedagogy is more than the materials, (b) districts often force district-wide requirements that are at odds with the Montessori pedagogy, and (c) Montessori teachers in public schools do not feel supported. This article concludes with a discussion of how to better support Montessori teachers in public school settings based on the study’s findings.
