Abstract/Notes: Four experiments were designed to identify socioeconomic differences in preschool locus of control, develop a measurement technique for differentiating between internal and external locus of control in preschoolers, and study the effect of four kinds of preschool programs on locus of control. During the first experiment, the Stephens-Delys Reinforcement Contingency Interview (SDRCI) was developed to assess internal locus of control development in preschoolers. When used with 24 4-year-olds in a Head Start program, the measure was found to have rater and retest reliability; the race of the interviewer did not significantly affect scores. The second experiment indicated that the performance of 32 preschool boys on a mirror-tracing task was positively related to internal locus of control as measured by the SDRCI. In the third study, investigators tested 55 Head Start preschoolers and 50 middle-class nursery school children with the SDRCI. Lower internal control scores were found for the Head Start children than for the middle-class nursery school group; no differences were found between black and white Head Start groups. A final study of 114 children found a nonsignificant tendency for Montessori preschool experience (and to a lesser extent, parent cooperative nursery school experience) to increase internal control, as measured by the SDRCI, more than Head Start or a more structured compensatory preschool program. Motivace rodičů pro volbu Montessori předškolního vzdělávání / Motivation of parents to choose Montessori preschool education

Available from: Univerzita Karlova Institutional Repository

Abstract/Notes: This bachelor thesis Motivation of parents to choose Montessori preschool education is divided in two parts-theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part I described what is Montessori, who was Maria Montessori, how does Montessori look like now, what are the main principles of this education, how important is a role of a teacher and prepared environment and the end of this chapter was about a relationship between parents and education. The practical part was based on a questionnaire survey that was send among parents who have their children in Montessori kindergarten. The results show that parents choose Montessori especially because they sympathize with Montessori philosophy and it´s principles. For parents the most important were individual approach of teachers to children, kids learning responsibility and mutual respect.

Abstract/Notes: This chapter describes how learning in the Montessori system hinges on students’ self-determined engagement which is encoded in the approach. Montessori environments are designed to engage students’ interests and offer activities that are challenging—but not too challenging—for each child. Montessori schools have been associated with positive outcomes related to students’ intrinsic motivation, academic engagement, and social cohesion. Although more remains to be learned about students’ motivation and engagement in Montessori education, available research-based knowledge on Montessori schools’ impact on student motivation is promising, with strong theoretical grounds for such a relation.

Motivační struktura k pohybové aktivitě u žáků ve vybrané soukromé škole / Motivational structure for physical activity for pupils in a selected private school

Available from: Univerzita Karlova Institutional Repository

Abstract/Notes: The diploma thesis is focused on finding the motivational structure for physical aktivity of a specific group of children from a selected private primary school. These students are attending first through ninth grade, therefore attending both lower primary and upper primary school. Based on their classes, they have been divided into three examined groups. The first group consists of pupils of younger school age, pupils of the first through third grade, the second group consists of pupils of middle school age, which includes pupils of the fourth to sixth grade and the last third group consists of pupils of older school age, which corresponds age of pupils in the seventh to ninth year of compulsory school attendance. Due to my pedagogical work as a teacher at this school, the pupils were deliberately chosen from the Private Primary School and Kindergarten Viva Bambini s.r.o. based in České Budějovice. This school teaches according to the principles of an Italian doctor, anthropologist, and pedagogue Maria Montessori. The aim of the diploma thesis is, by processing statistical data from a questionnaire survey submitted to both school students and their legal guardians (parents), to determine the motivational factors that lead them to physical activity. From their answers, I find out what influence...

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to explore motivational strategies that can be used to increase faculty and staff’s motivation in a small private Montessori school, located in New Jersey. Ten members of the faculty and staff participated in this action research project over the course of six weeks. Pre-data collection included an online motivational quiz that identified each faculty and staff member’s top three motivators. Short term goals were created by the participant with the administrator in a pre-conference based on the motivator results of each individual’s pre-test. The administrator used the motivational strategies of each faculty and staff member throughout the research to support them on their short term goal. Data was collected on each faculty and staff member through a weekly conference and reflection journal, as well as a daily job expectation and negative talk tally. The results of this action research suggest that using individual motivators for each faculty and staff member increase employee motivation and enthusiasm in the workplace. The action research project was done at the beginning of the school year when the faculty and staff are the most enthusiastic and motivated. I would like to continue my research throughout the school year, analyzing any significant changes in the data.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this research is to determine what effect weekly conferences and goal setting opportunities have on the motivation of kindergarten children, in a multi-age (3-6 year-old) Montessori early childhood classroom in the Midwest. The goal was for children to become selfmotivated to choose and practice independent work that is developmentally appropriate. Data was collected before, during, and after the project using an observational checklist to determine the effectiveness of implementing goal setting and conferences with students. The research showed that writing goals in a journal was helpful for the majority of students. The students involved in the study came into the classroom ready to choose the lessons that were written in their journal. Also witnessed was an increase in positive talk and encouragement throughout the classroom. The students were reassuring each other and checked on one another to see how close they were to meeting their goals. Future research could be done to determine if goal setting could be carried over into the home and further research into intrinsic motivation of children would be helpful.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this action research project was to study the effects of goal-setting and self-reflection on the intrinsic motivation and on task behavior of students in an upper level (ages 9-12) public Montessori classroom. The project used multiple data sources to better understand the impact of goal-setting and self-reflection on student academic achievement, prosocial behavior, and emotional wellbeing. Teacher-made rating scales and self-reflection prompts were used to determine student outlook on completion of their goals while semi-structured student interviews, given at the beginning, middle, and end of the project, gave insight into student perceptions of goal-setting benefits. After analyzing the results of the data, it was found that weekly short term and long range goal-setting can have a positive impact on student achievement, prosocial behavior, and emotional wellbeing.
