Abstract/Notes: Montessori's acceptance into medical school was a personal achievement and would have ramifications for the lives of a multitude of future generations. In March 1896, she was invited to the first Women's International Congress, in Berlin, where she spoke of the need for equal pay for equal work for women. Montessori's vision for social change has filtered into early childhood classrooms, and public Montessori schools have entered the mainstream, touching the lives of millions of children.

Abstract/Notes: The goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of the Montessori educational theory on the field of the early childhood education in terms of the educational philosophy. To do that, the theories including Frobel, Dewey, and Piaget were compared to the Montessori theory as ways to understand its role in the development of the educational theory. The guideline developed by Braun & Edward(1972) was used to compare and analyze the theoreandal components (e.g., a view of children, teachers, and learning) in each theory. The major findings of this study and suggestions for the further study were discussed.

Negro Culture and Early Childhood Education

Available from: ERIC

Abstract/Notes: Most compensatory early childhood programs are based on an assumption of linguistic and cognitive deficits which must be remedied if the Negro child is to succeed in school, but much collected data questions this assumption. The language of many lower class Negro children has been shown to be well-ordered and highly structured, although the dialect differs from standard English. A body of literature has appeared which terms the Negro mother inadequate, but newer insight, illustrated by the work of Virginia Heyer Young, recognizes that the Negro has a culture and life style which is meaningful and well-defined. Culture and race are too often used interchangeably, and early intervention programs have been created which are ethnocentric and lack cross-cultural perspective. Suggestions are given for ways in which the school needs to be restructured to take advantage of these observed cultural differences, particularly in regard to language and reading. Intervention is seen as necessary, but it should assume a culture conflict, rather than a culture deficit, viewpoint.
