Moving through Struggle: Body Awareness as a Tool to Combat Stress and Trauma

Abstract/Notes: Executive functioning (inhibitory control, working memory, and mental flexibility) is less accessible to a brain on constant heightened alert for perceived threats (Center on the Developing Child, n.d.). In the fall of2022, for the first time ever, a task force assembled by the Department of Health and Human Services urged medical providers to screen all patients under 65 for anxiety (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, 2022). Shifts toward chronic anxiety, both in ourselves and the children we serve, indicate that we need to use intentional tactics to promote mental health and emotional literacy, or the ability to identify, communicate, and process emotional experiences. In his book The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel Van der Kolk (2014) explains that a child's secure attachment with a caring adult from a very young age is the central factor in one's ability to overcome the adverse effects of trauma and develop a locus of control.

Abstract/Notes: Equity Examined is both a series of essays and an assessment tool designed to help schools and teacher education programs measure and understand the current state of DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] within their organizations. Before it was Amazon's #1 New Release in the Education Assessment category, before it had international distribution, it began as a lofty idea in the minds and hearts of a small group of Montessorians trying to wrap their minds around a huge task: supporting anti-bias, antiracist practices in AMS schools and teacher education programs, and meeting the needs of our diverse community. According to Love, four elements enable humans to live outside the behaviors and thoughts we've been socialized into that allow us to perpetuate inequities: awareness, analysis, acting, and accountability/allyship.

Abstract/Notes: In this diverse world, parents and educators around the globe today face new challenges connecting with raising children. The Nigerian Igbo belief ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ can re-emerge as ‘It takes a multi-cultural perspective in the village that raises a child prepared for the culturally integrated world’. This book offers a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary, and fresh, global perspective on parenting today by delving deep into the cultural, ethnic, and traditional characteristics of parenting, as well as the latest evidence-based scientific research on parenting a healthy child in every developmental stage for this era. Fascinating topics discussed here include connecting to an infant, potty training toddlers, teaching emotional regulation to preschoolers, task management of school-age children, dramatic transitions of tweens, and communicating effectively with an adolescent. Includes a section about Maria Montessori and Montessori education.

Abstract/Notes: Nichole Holtvluwer writes for fellow guides who work in the toddler community. Recognizing that communication with parents is the most important path to serving the child, Holtvluwer offers concrete advice beginning with the guide's most important stance: withholding judgment. She details four steps to working with parents or caregivers: building a relationship, providing knowledge, encouraging confidence, and finding excitement and joy. She concludes by suggesting that Montessori theory and parent education can be embedded into the issues that parents want to discuss, such as toileting.
