Abstract/Notes: Evaluated the effectiveness of peace education efforts in eight classrooms in four urban elementary schools, comparing the Montessori and Second Step approaches to peace education. Found that the Montessori approach produced the most peaceful classroom due to the democratic, student-centered, holistic nature of Montessori education. (MDM)

Montessori Grade 9 Students and Their Use of an Online Concept Mapping Website: A Case Study Exploration
Available from: University of Ottawa - Institutional Repository
See More
Abstract/Notes: This study investigated the impact of an online concept mapping website (Concept Maps for Learning, or CMfL) designed to provide targeted formative feedback to students. The aims of this study were to determine the usefulness of CMfL for both teachers and students, as a tool for instruction and self-regulated learning. Additionally, the impacts of CMfL on supporting student learning were observed. This research site of this study was a Montessori high school, and the participating students were enrolled in the Ontario Grade 9 Academic Mathematics course. The educational philosophies deployed at the research site offered independence and flexibility to students with respect to how the Ontario Grade 9 Academic Mathematics course was approached, and therefore matched the self-regulated learning components of the study. This study measured student achievement across three milestones over the data collection period to analyse any cognitive impact that CMfL had on the participating students. Metacognitive impacts, as well as the students’ perception of usefulness of CMfL, were measured through surveys that were administered at the milestone points. Usefulness of CMfL from the teacher’s perspective was determined through interviews with the teacher. The participating students and teacher were also provided with the opportunity to provide feedback on how CMfL could be improved through the aforementioned surveys and interviews, respectively. The evidence collected over the study suggests that CMfL can be a useful tool for teaching and learning in a self-regulated environment, and that frequent engagement with CMfL may can support student learning. However, there is room for improvement that may increase student adoption and aid teaching strategy.

Assessing Young Children's Personal Constructs of 'Nature' Using a Modified Repertory Grid Test: A Case Study
Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses
See More
Abstract/Notes: This paper presents a method for assessing the personal construct systems of young children (ages 4 to 6) regarding the notion of 'nature,' conducted at a Montessori Casa in Toronto, Ontario. Images from the participants' drawings of 'nature' were used in a card sorting exercise and as elements in a modified repertory grid test. Member checking was conducted through recorded conversations with the children throughout the process to minimize the influence of my own construct system. I conducted content analyses of the initial drawings, and made structural measurements and statistical analyses of the card sort and repertory grid data. The limited results indicate that this modified form of repertory grid test is reliable and useful for assessing the structure of young children's construct systems regarding 'nature.' Using Personal Construct Theory may facilitate the development of more participatory, engaging, and effective Environmental Education programs.

Abstract/Notes: This article probes the vicissitudes of racism and how the multicultural perspectives of a Montessori preschool environment can prevent prejudices. Barbara Hacker is whole-heartedly committed to human unity transcending color differences. Racism is incompatible with a Montessori classroom that shares different holidays and cultures, builds social cohesion, and creates a safe and tolerant place.

Cosmology and children: A phenomenological study of the Timeline of Light
See More
Abstract/Notes: This study asks: What is it like for Montessori children, ages 11-12, to experience a current and integral approach to cosmology via the author's original Timeline of Light Curriculum? Based on the cosmological principles detailed in Swimme and Berry's The Universe Story (Swimme &Berry, 1992) the 08 December 2012 Page 5 of 14 ProQuest curriculum is integral and multidisciplinary: art, music, movement, experiment, mathematics, geometry, prose, and poetry are all employed. The children's work is used as the phenomenological data for a subsequent hermeneutic (thematic interpretation). Three themes emerge from the work: the affective ground, the creation of a metaphoric Cosmos, and identity. The affective ground is described as the ground of feeling that sets the tone for both subsequent feelings and the creation of the metaphoric cosmos. The metaphoric cosmos is the creative interpretation of both each individual child and the group. That creation is fostered by the exercises presented in the lessons. This thematic relies heavily on the expanded definitions of metaphor as defined by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), and Samples' (1993). The study also describes an emergent theme of expanded personal identity resultant from the metaphoric ways the children described their experiences throughout their studies.
