Abstract/Notes: Two important aspects of teaching and caring for children were explored using a questionnaire: communication preferences for talking to children and assumptions about how children think about specific things in various situations. Forty parents and teachers from Montessori Schools and forty parents and teachers from Milwaukee Public Schools completed a questionnaire concerning four social situations and one factual situation. Parents and teachers ranked responses to each situation from 1 to 5 or wrote an alternative response if none of those given were appropriate. Parents and teachers also predicted what they would actually do in each situation and described their ideal response in each case. In the second part of the questionnaire parents and teachers gave their views on how children understood ideas relating to time, another's point of view, and play. The responses to the questionnaire by parents and teachers tended to reflect the basic philosophy of Montessori education, which is based upon a cognitive constructivist model in which rational authoritative and distancing strategies rank higher than diversion, normative authoritative, and direct authoritative strategies. Moreover, the beliefs and behaviors of Montessori parents and teachers tended to support this conclusion. A difference was found in the diversion strategy whereby both groups ranked diversion high in the first and second social situations and very low in the fourth and fifth social situations. These differences were likely due to the particular type of situation described. The majority of subjects, both teachers and parents, responded with more cognitive reasons than social reasons to the five situations. They also responded more frequently with active answers than passive answers. Finally, it was found that public school teachers and parents who were from upper middle class districts and professionally educated tended to use the same strategies as the Montessori teachers and parents. In fact, there were no significant differences between the ideal ranking of these five situations by these two groups.

Strategies to Support Classroom Integration Among New Elementary Montessori Students: Qualitative Case Study
Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: Elementary students transferring from traditional education classrooms to a Montessori school lack executive function skills (EFS) and struggle with academic performance and disrupt classes. The specific problem is the lack of strategies and support from school administrators to address an overwhelming number of new elementary Montessori students needing EFS improvement. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore teachers' and school administrators' perceptions of strategies to support teachers regarding EFS development among new Montessori students in grades first through sixth in a single Southwestern Montessori school. The theoretical framework was primarily Vygotsky's social constructionism. The research question involved: What are teachers' and school administrators' perceptions regarding strategies used to support teachers in developing EFS among new Montessori students in grades first through sixth in a Southwestern Montessori school? The sample included four administrators, eight classroom teachers, and four student support teachers. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted, and 2 focus groups were employed: 1 for administrators, and a separate 1 for teachers/support personnel. Findings indicated the need for improved vetting of potential students during the admission process, additional classroom resources, and improvements to the parental education module. Future research is needed to explore the potential for an issue-based strategic planning model to foster collaboration between school administration and teachers.

Abstract/Notes: The paper deals with the issue of supporting inclusion through early therapeutic-pedagogical stimulation using Marie Montessori’s concept. It presents the results of qualitative research, on the basis of which the therapeutic strategies of the therapeutic pedagogue were identified in the context of early stimulation. The research presents verbal and combined verbal-physical-activity strategies in early therapeutic-pedagogical stimulation according to M. Montessori. Therapeutic-pedagogical early stimulation according to Maria Montessori’s concept is a specific therapeutic approach within a broader understanding of early intervention. The goal is to maximize the participation of a child with at-risk development in the life of the family and community in the context of supporting inclusion.

Abstract/Notes: Religious and moral development is essential to early childhood education; therefore, it is necessary to implement development strategies. This study aimed to explain the strategy for fostering young children's religious and moral development. This is qualitative research employing a literature review methodology. Collecting articles, reducing articles, presenting articles, explaining articles, and drawing conclusions comprised the data analysis technique. The findings revealed that media for fostering religious and moral development include Alqur'an learning media, digital animation media, Educational Game Tools, BEAT application media, ICT (Information and Communication Technology), VCDs, and student worksheets. While the strategies for developing religious and moral aspects in young children are exemplary, they include playing while learning, the Montessori method, the PAIKEM model, behavior development, habituation, storytelling, demonstration methods, and programs for character education. In conclusion, the strategy for fostering religious and moral development in young children can be implemented through various media and instructional techniques.

Challenges Faced by Montessori Colleges in Kenya in Implementing Competitive Strategies
Available from: eRepository at University of Nairobi, Kenya

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to establish the challenges faced by Montessori Colleges in Kenya in implementing competitive strategies. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population for the study were the 16 colleges that offer Montessori course only. Twelve colleges responded representing a 75% response rate. A semi-structured questionnaire consisting of closed and open-ended questions was used to collect data using the drop and pick method. The study revealed that operational costs, high competitive levels, and no marketing budget were the major challenges. In addition, strategies like low cost staff, part-time teachers hired on a needy basis, taking advantage of any attractive opportunity and use of using the students to market the college and were used heavily in the colleges. Based on the findings, it was recommended that cost leadership strategy be taken into account to maintain competitiveness. This is because cost being a major challenge requires that firms pay a great deal of attention to discretionary costs and look for ways of bringing the costs down. According to Porter (1985) pp 13, 'a cost leader, however cannot ignore the bases of differentiation. If its product is not perceived as comparable or acceptable by buyers, a cost leader will be forced to discount prices well below competitors' to gain sales.' This may result in the firm invalidating the advantages of its cost position.
