Gerontology, Montessori method of education

[In this book, Jutta Hollander first presents the essential principles of Maria Montessori's pedagogy in childhood and adolescence. In a next step, she deals with the question to what extent these guidelines can also be transferred to the entire lifespan. She focuses on the age phase and looks for possibilities of a convergent approach between Montessori pedagogy and gerontology. In this way, an approach is created that brings together more than 100 years of experience with Maria Montessori's pedagogy with the currently pressing demographic issues. How this idea can finally find its way into the various areas of gerontology - especially in geragogics, and how this potential can be developed and used in practice, is shown using the example of the household community.]

Entre Pauline Kergomard et Maria Montessori [Between Pauline Kergomard and Maria Montessori]

Abstract/Notes: In the 19th century the references concerning the education in the early years of infants took 2 different orientations. One uses an “educational mother” as the model. Between the love and limits that she offers her child, she brings a moral education. In the other reference, the educator, very respectful to the dynamic of the child, intervenes as little as possible. The objective is that he conquers autonomy and learns a sense of responsibilities. Two educated women are representative of these 2 tendencies: On one hand Pauline Kergomard (preschool inspector 1838–1925), author of “the motherly education at school”, in her teaching to school principals, presents as a reference the “comprehensive and devoted mother” taking care of the physical intellectual and moral development of children. In this case she represents more the dimension of “care”. On the other hand, Maria Montessori, (Italian pedagogue, 1870-1952) author of "scientific education”, is going to impute little by little her ideas based on the fact that the child has the necessary qualities to grow on his/her own. So according to the educator with just creating a high-quality environment in order to enable the child to find the extract to grow up and be the autor of their own evolution. We consider her to represent the concept of education, resulting from a method. We have presented the essence of both authors convictions. Alter restoring them in their context, we will confront them to see in what degree these methods are opposed or not, in the sense of seeing how they complete and intervene with each other. Our idea is to make use of the analysis of both orientations and develop to what point care is indispensable to the quality and the education of child and more over at the present time.

[In this thesis work, the salient features of the Montessori educational approach have been outlined, highlighting on the one hand the profound complexity and relevance that characterizes it and on the other the numerous confirmations both from the teaching considered innovative and from the psychological sciences. A research path was also presented aimed at monitoring the recent experimentation of the Montessori pedagogical approach in some primary schools in the province of Trento. The research was conducted using both qualitative tools (such as an observational check list produced ad hoc for the research), and standardized questionnaires, with the aim of comparing the data collected with a representative sample of a wider school environment.]

[Criticizing the current historiographical canon, which tends to connect the first Montessori to the positivist and secularist environment, the article shows how, in reality, Montessori can be more exactly inserted in the constellation of educators close to modernism and how her pedagogy is characterized in a modernist sense.]

Maria und Mario Montessoris Kosmische Erziehung: Vision und Konkretion [Maria and Mario Montessori's Cosmic Upbringing: Vision and Concretion]

[The concept of cosmic education is based on Maria Montessori's considerations about the position of man in the cosmos, which she presented as a great vision in the 1930s and which was developed in India in the 1940s together with her son Mario into a concrete educational concept. Maria Montessori's intention with this vision was to focus on the interdependencies of natural history as well as historical-social evolutionary processes in order to lay the foundations for a responsible handling of ecological cycles as well as for solidarity between social groups and nations. For the first time, Mario Montessori's important, long neglected contribution to the development and establishment of the concept "Cosmic Education" is explicitly worked out.] / Dissertation.

Abstract/Notes: The late 1920s and early 1930s in Italy saw the peak of a process establishing Montessori pedagogy which would come to an end within a decade with the drastic closure of all Montessori schools in the country. This epilogue, which would also be seen in those years in other countries with a similar political regime, calls for an analysis of the relations between the creator of the most famous and widespread pedagogical method in the world and the political regime that favoured the application and dissemination of the method in Italy - a country in which it had still not encountered those conditions of realisation that would instead come about in the crucial years of the rise of Fascism and the completion of the totalitarian state. The essay examines the main events marking the history of Montessori’s conflictual relationship with Fascism in the years 1924-1934, from the initial contacts characterising it and leading up to the final break, after which Montessori finally left Italy until the end of World War II.
