Abstract/Notes: Supporting multilingual learners’ access to equitable and socially just language education requires more from teachers than a critical stance and language awareness. Teachers of multilingual students must understand how their awareness and ideologies drive their actions and how their actions can generate new awareness both inside the classroom in pedagogical choices and outside the classroom in interactions with families and community partners. To aid teachers in moving through cycles of applying awareness to action, the authors designed the Community Action Plan (CAP) assignment for a family and community engagement course. This article outlines the components of the course curriculum and the conceptual framework that guided its design. The authors also provide a case study of how one novice teacher, Katrina (co-author), navigated the curriculum. They offer suggestions for how language teacher educators might guide in-service and preservice teachers to implement CAPs of various types to promote socially just language education for and with K–12 learners.

Abstract/Notes: As the Montessori Method continues its expansion in public education, a social justice lens is needed to analyze its contributions and limitations, given the increase in racial and socioeconomic diversity in the United States. Furthermore, much of the work in Social Justice Education (SJE) focuses on classroom techniques and curriculum, overlooking the essential work of school administrators and parents, whose work significantly influences the school community. The current study applied an SJE framework to the efforts of one urban, socioeconomically and racially integrated Montessori charter school. We examined the extent to which SJE principles were incorporated across the school community, using an inductive, qualitative, case-study approach that included meetings, surveys, focus groups, and interviews. Administrators quickly adopted a system-wide approach, but parents—often color-blind or minimizing of the relevance of race—consistently resisted. Study results imply a continued need for an institutional approach, not solely a classroom or curricular focus, when integrating social justice into Montessori schools.

Abstract/Notes: This article discusses participative action research performed by a network consisting of researchers and student-teachers of a University of Applied Sciences and teachers and pupils of four primary schools in the Netherlands. The research took place in the context of the research group ‘Behaviour and Research in the Educational Praxis’. The primary schools focused on inclusive education in order to allow children with special educational needs to participate in mainstream schools. The central idea of the research project was to integrate the insiders’ perspective of the teachers with the outsiders’ perspective of the university researchers. Therefore, the research project combined process and content goals. The research lasted from September 2008 to June 2010, and consisted of five different stages: orientation, general and specific exploration, reconstruction and overall analysis. This article describes the goals and results of each of these stages. The article concludes with a final discussion on the main findings. An important result included a nuanced view of teachers on their power position in the classroom. Teachers facilitated children to increase their own responsibility for their behaviour and their interaction with their classmates and the teacher. This seemed to provide a basis for a more organic order in the classroom, which was less dependent on the interventions of the teacher.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori education is aligned with Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP), yet poor students and students of color are not attending Montessori schools. In this research, narrative inquiry is used to unpack how well Montessori education is serving poor students and students of color. Results show great potential, while also display a complex web of history, perception, and current practices that need to be addressed in order for Montessori education to best serve poor students and students of color.
