Abstract/Notes: The late 1920s and early 1930s in Italy saw the peak of a process establishing Montessori pedagogy which would come to an end within a decade with the drastic closure of all Montessori schools in the country. This epilogue, which would also be seen in those years in other countries with a similar political regime, calls for an analysis of the relations between the creator of the most famous and widespread pedagogical method in the world and the political regime that favoured the application and dissemination of the method in Italy - a country in which it had still not encountered those conditions of realisation that would instead come about in the crucial years of the rise of Fascism and the completion of the totalitarian state. The essay examines the main events marking the history of Montessori’s conflictual relationship with Fascism in the years 1924-1934, from the initial contacts characterising it and leading up to the final break, after which Montessori finally left Italy until the end of World War II.

Abstract/Notes: The final thesis deals with the use of Montessori materials in teaching English to young learners in a Montessori school. The aim of the final thesis is to investigate the possibilities of using originally designed Montessori materials with third graders in English classes and find out their impact on English teaching to these pupils. The theoretical part focuses on the Montessori method with emphasis on a prepared environment and Montessori materials. Characteristics of young learners and their ways of learning are introduced. The empirical part is approached as research where the emphasis is put on a detailed description of learning materials and reflection of their use in the Montessori classroom. / Závěrečná práce se zabývá využitím Montessori pomůcek ve výuce angličtiny u mladších žáků v Montessori škole. Abstract/Notes: This article looks at the common ground between Montessorian and more traditional approaches to early childhood education. The author refers to ideas put forward by Dr E M Hallowell which suggest that early childhood educators focus on concepts such as playfulness, practice, mastery and reconnection; these concepts hold the key to raising children with healthy self-esteem, moral awareness and spiritual values. The author points out the similarities these psychological goals have with those a Montessori educator and a traditional early childhood educator aim for. She describes the approach taken at the Benevolent Society centre, which caters for babies and children up to five years. General Montessori principles are used, such as less is more -decluttering the children's personal space and giving them options for exploration; and spoken language - the process of interacting with children on a daily basis as the most fundamental step in building trusting relationships. The four vital areas of focus that keep re-appearing in any program written at the centre are cognitive development, fine motor development, gross motor development and social interaction.
