Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this review is to investigate, via a quantitative meta‐analysis, the hypothesis that the Montessori method is at least as effective as traditional education in affecting academic and social outcomes for children. The proposed meta‐analysis is completed with the intention to help the public, as well as the research community, make more informed and empirically sound decisions regarding Montessori education by collecting, codifying, synthesizing, and disseminating the current empirical research.

Abstract/Notes: In lyrical prose, Jim Webster lays out his view on the universal human use of tools and how "humans meet the practical demands of life." Webster lauds physical work and the work of the hand as they both support engagement, social cooperation, a deepening of relationships, and sustainability. Practical work is valuable and is plentiful as it generates reciprocal community, dignity, self-awareness, and provides opportunity by giving comfort, refining skills, expressing creative insight, and imparting a sense of gratitude. Abstract/Notes: Polli Soholt points to normalization in the first plane as leading to the successful realization of the human personality, which is the basis of social development. Children who have cultivated concentration and purposeful work at an early age develop the virtues to become world citizens. Normalization can be assisted by certain practices: 1) interesting and purposeful presentations; 2) small group discussions and conversation; 3) group singing, finger plays, games, poetry, and true stories; and 4) group movement and demonstrations through acting out right actions. Normalization, according to Soholt, is an integral result of classroom group activities and is influenced by the teacher's self-presentation of respect, clarity, and consistency. [This article is based on the talk presented at the NAMTA conference titled "Fostering Montessori Preparedness for Global Citizenship" in Seattle, WA, November 13-16, 2014.]
