Abstract/Notes: Using examples from the Fruitful Orchard School in Abuja, Nigeria, Junnifa Uzodike reminds us of the special power of practical life activities to connect the young child to the world. Engagement with work that is in service to others, that tends to the natural world, and that attends to the needs of the self prepares the child to be an independent individual who moves confidently within the world, yet whose sense of gratitude for the gifts of history and the natural world moves them to act with conscientious intention and be an agent for peace.

Abstract/Notes: This reprint of a 1980 article argues that there is a unique global consciousness inherent in the "prepared environment" of Maria Montessori's student-centered, nurturing curriculum for young children. Maintains that war and peace, overpopulation, hunger, environmental problems, and other global concerns can be addressed through education. (MDM)

Abstract/Notes: Jim Roberts captures the challenges of walking with small groups of children under six, building confidence in bushwhacking trails, and walking on brambles. Mr. Roberts gives many clues as to indirect teaching moments while enjoying the ramble with an emphasis on opening the sensory pathways without the clutter of names, which can often give young children a false sense of intimacy with the natural world. Abstract/Notes: Bill Rupp offers practical wisdom from his perch as a Montessori parent of four children and as a self-proclaimed digital immigrant who has spent over twenty years in the information technology field. His list of "Considerations before Making Rules for Technology Use" builds on a positive environment of conversation and communication with wise suggestions for placement of computers, time limits, access, and a screen/life balance. Suggested guidelines for schools and a guide for the ideal times for schools to re-evaluate technology rules will be valuable to administrators and teachers at all schools.
