Abstract/Notes: Book review of 'How You Say It: Why You Talk the Way You Do - And What it Says About You' by Katherine D. Kinzler. [...]bilingual children usually have a smaller vocabulary in each language than a monolingual child would, but their total number of words is generally equal to those of monolingual children. [...]because bilingual children often use their two languages in different contexts and for different purposes, their vocabularies across languages are rarely the same. [...]it can mean the difference between a child who can passively understand a second language and a child who actively speaks a second language.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori education has been in use for more than a century in countries around the globe and has been studied in a wide variety of academic disciplines, assembled together here in one volume for the first time. Maria Montessori began her work with cognitively delayed children, but her legacy is the pedagogical approach she initially developed working with young children from low-income families in Italy. As described in this handbook, Montessori created classroom environments with materials supporting children working independently and a radically different teacher preparation system focused on the teacher as an observing guide. Montessori’s pedagogy as explained through her writings and lectures, detailed in this handbook, is based on her scientific training, using systematic observation and careful documentation of children’s behaviors in the classroom. Her ideas have spread widely as a truly international form of education, with Montessori schools in 148 countries and significant public Montessori programs in the United States, the Netherlands, Thailand and India. Today, Montessori education is available for infants through adolescents and even for the elderly. The Handbook of Montessori Education is an accessible compilation of works tracing Montessori education from its historical and philosophical roots to current research including neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and education, and scholarship in contemporary issues of culture, race and ethnicity, disability studies, gender, indigeneity, and environmentalism. / Includes a glossary of Montessori terminology.
