Abstract/Notes: Defines Cosmic Education using Mario Montessori's concrete illustration of the interdisciplinary and synthetic nature of the program. Suggests that the "The Great River," a sixth "Great Lesson," can be a framework for the history of human cooperation, and that this story lays the groundwork for teaching an understanding of social cooperation and solidarity in Montessori schools. Abstract/Notes: Don't be fooled by Elise Huneke-Stone's disarming beginning where she implies that grace and courtesy is not normally associated with the elementary. She goes on to elaborate that grace and courtesy is indeed everywhere: in project-based learning, understanding of moral precepts, social and intellectual independence, in the utilization of empathy, used in the unfolding of the reasoning mind and imagination, and in matters of justice and fairness. Integral to the gregariousness and the rules of group work, the elementary child needs grace and courtesy to manage their strong social orientation as children of the second plane. Abstract/Notes: Paula Leigh-Doyle uses "joyful engagement" as the main criterion for a child's success in the Montessori classroom. She defines joyful engagement in terms of Montessori's solid foundation of mind-body integration, suggesting "ways to slip port the child's nervous system (usually through movement) so that they may feel grounded, integrated, and able to process information to the fullest of their potential." For both the primary and elementary levels, she offers ways to evaluate any proposed intervention in light of whether it is compatible with the Montessori goals of joyful engagement and increasing independence.
