Abstract/Notes: Differential effects of four preschool programs were evaluated through pre‐and post‐batteries of standardized tests. The interventions represent levels of structure along a continuum from the traditional to the highly structured preschool. Results from all instruments differentiated among the programs, and clearly favored the highly structured preschool.

The aim of the present study is to investigate parents’ perspectives of Montessori education at school and their support of Montessori education at home in International Montessori Schools in Pennsylvania in USA. Abstract/Notes: Follow-up of achievement test and IQ data on low-income black youths who had participated for 1 year in Bereiter-Engelmann, DARCEE, Montessori, or Traditional prekindergarten was continued through ninth and tenth grades. Stable trends persisted. Montessori males and DARCEE females were high; Montessori males were performing at about grade level on reading and math; IQs parallelled achievement test results. Additional tests of fluid intelligence, task persistence, self-esteem, divergent thinking, task approach, and aspirations and expectations were administered in ninth and tenth grades. Results from program comparisons and factor analyses were consistent with those on IQ and school achievement. The possibility of relationships between techniques used in the different preschool programs and sex differences in children's developmental level was discussed.

Abstract/Notes: The Montessori education philosophy has been around for over 100 years but has become particularly popular in the United States in the last two decades. Montessori is characterized by its child-centered lens, promotion of independence, and support of a child's natural desire to learn. Montessori programs are often associated with wealthy families able to pay for private preschool, but the Montessori curriculum was originally developed and implemented with great success in low-income communities in early 20th century Rome. With this in mind, I determined to investigate the opportunity for using Montessori programs as a public health intervention in low-income communities. The central goal of the resulting project is the education of a general audience about the opportunity for existing Montessori programs in early childhood to serve as an intervention to decrease health disparities in later life. The resulting research paper comprises a literature review of relevant research, a discussion of the link between education and health outcomes, and interviews with Montessori educators and early childhood specialists. From this research, Montessori programs were found to have great potential to serve as an equalizer between children from low- and high-income communities, predicting future academic success, decreasing wealth gaps, and improving adult health outcomes.
