Abstract/Notes: TRANSFORMING LITERACY WITH MONTESSORI STORYTELLING By Michael Dorer Parent Child Press 280 pages, paperback $24.95 It breaks my heart when I walk into a classroom and see a dusty set of Montessori Grammar Boxes and word study materials shoved into a corner, where they may actually fit but rarely leave. While adults and educators may recognize the importance of language arts and grammar, these fields of study are rarely a student's response to the question "What is your favorite subject in school?" Teachers, too, often dread grammar-they see it as an abstract subject that they feel responsible for but struggle to engage students with. Each day, almost without fail, he will say, "Hey, Ms. Deepa, guess what I have for lunch today?" And I will reply, "I have no idea, what DO you have for lunch today?" He will reply, "Well, I have a sun butter and raspberry jelly sandwich and some veggie straws and some strawberries and blueberries and a tub of yogurt."
