Abstract/Notes: Montessori English Teaching Model (METM) is a unique way of instruction that uses specifically designed learning settings and approaches to nurture students' intrinsic desire to learn. English achievements for Saudi students have been for long very low. The current study aimed to investigate the real challenges of implementing Montessori English Teaching Model in Saudi Arabian elementary schools. Qualitative method, namely focus group discussion, was used. Four purposive focus groups with different educational positions and experiences were formulated, namely school supervisors (SS), school principals (SP), English teachers (ET), and English curriculum specialists (ES). The major findings of the study were that1) major challenges existed for implementing the METM in Saudi elementary schools, 2) the challenges concentrated on four categories: educational context, work ethics and environment, nature of teachers and students, and social aspects, and 3) agreements on some of the sub-themes fluctuated. Recommendations for further investigations are made for interested and educational personnel.

The Nongraded Elementary School: Lessons from History.

Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association

Abstract/Notes: This paper recounts the history of nongraded elementary schools. After the American Civil War, there arose an uncoordinated effort to question graded practices. By the end of the 19th century, schools which sought to be more sensitive to differences in children's learning styles were established. Notable among these schools was Dewey's Laboratory School (1893-1903). In the 20th century, Stoddard's Dual Progress Plan proposed that students spend half the school day in a homeroom and half the day studying elective subjects under specialist teachers. In Germany around 1923, Petersen established a school that featured heterogeneous age groupings. Petersen's ideas influenced the establishment of nongraded schools in Wisconsin. Other European influences on the American nongraded school movement included Montessori's schools and the British Infant and Primary School system. Since the mid-1940s, public education in America has been in disequilibrium. The implementation of nongraded programs [Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Francisco, CA, April 20-24, 1992)]

Charter Schools: A Descriptive Study of Empowerment within the Operation of Charter Schools
Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses
See More
Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to describe the variables that contributed to the establishment of a charter school in an urban Arizona district and rural California district noting the similarities and dissimilarities, and to disclose the factors used to justify the implementation of the Montessori theory of education. Another purpose of the study was to describe the guidelines for maintaining a charter school, and the evaluation methods and factors used in the school's unique experience with staffing and funding. This research was descriptive and employed a case study approach. Descriptive research methodology was used to identify the same factors found in the Arizona study replicated by the researcher. Nonprobability, purposive sampling technique was the sampling used in the study. The instrument used for the study was interviews. Findings. The NFL/YET Academy in Arizona and Discovery Charter School in California experienced many similarities when the same variables were applied to both schools. As a result, the stakeholders of both schools used the principles of the organizational theory of empowerment to implement choices in curriculum. This process allowed the stakeholders an opportunity to meet the educational needs of students in the community. The following conclusions were made: (1) community empowerment plays a vital role in educating children; (2) the charter school movement allows parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders to be involved in the creation of school governance and curriculum; and (3) charter schools allow all stakeholders to become involved in the decision-making process. The following are recommendations for further study: (1) This study should be conducted using a greater number of charter schools, and (2) This study should be conducted using administrator's leadership style in the organizational theory area of structure/roles.
