Abstract/Notes: This study explored the effects of peer interactions on kindergarten children’s construction of conservation and conflict resolution knowledge during storybook reading. Previous studies have identified that peer interactions can support the meaning-making processes of children in social relationships and problem-solving, but little is known about whether the interaction with mixed-age or more competent peers is more important in supporting knowledge construction. Sixty-four younger children in K2 and older children in K3 with similar socioeconomic backgrounds were recruited from a Montessori kindergarten in Kunming, China. An experimental design was applied to explore age group and conserver dominance effects on conservation and conflict resolution. Children were assigned randomly to eight groups in three 30-to-40-minute intervention sessions. Each session had a different theme for the children to learn about conservation and conflict resolution concepts and a hands-on activity to practice and discuss. ANOVAs were performed to test group effects, while multiple regression analyses were conducted to explore individual variations in age and pre-test scores in predicting post-test scores. Conservation knowledge was significantly better among children who differed in age groups in the post-test, but differences were not found in conflict resolution knowledge. Groups balanced with equal conservers and non-conservers improved the best, suggesting that peer social interactions can facilitate conservation and conflict resolution construction. These results provide new insights for early childhood educators to support peer interactions and children’s development. Implications, limitations, and future research are discussed.

Abstract/Notes: This study investigated the acceptability and knowledge of the Montessori Method of education among early years' practitioners in Lagos State. Four research questions and one hypothesis were raised for the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study consisted of all early years' practitioners in Lagos State while the sample comprised 126 early years practitioners which were stratified as 102 early years' practitioners (teachers) and 24 school operators (school heads/owners). In the first stage, proportionate sampling technique was used in selecting four Nursery schools from each of the six educational districts of Lagos State out of which two were Montessori Schools and the other two were non-Montessori schools. The total number of Nursery schools used for the study were twenty-four; whyile a random sampling technique was used in selecting four teachers from each Montessori school and five teachers from non-Montessori schools. Forty-eight Montessori teachers and fifty-four non-Montessori teachers were used for the study. The two researcher's designed instruments that were used to gather data for the study were Early Years' Practitioners Knowledge of Montessori Method (EYPKOMM) and School Operators Perception of Montessori Method (SOPOMM). EYPKOMM measured teachers' knowledge about the Montessori Method and it consisted of 20 close-ended items while SOPOMM consisted of 25 items on 4 point Likert scale. The study revealed that the majority of the teachers had average qualifications to work in early years' classrooms and that their knowledge of the Montessori Method is a little above average. It it also revealed school operators were enthusiastic and preferred the Montessori Method to conventional method but noted that the method is expensive to implement and too rigid to be adopted in conventional schools. It is therefore recommended that: (i) teachers seeking employment in a Montessori school should have professional training and experience; (ii) more awareness programme should be organized for early years' practitioners; (iii) The Montessori method should be adapted so that all stakeholders of education can benefit from it.

Abstract/Notes: Handwashing can prevent diarrhea-related illness and respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of structured intervention program on knowledge and practice of hand washing among preschool children. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in three-time phases among 32 preschoolers aged between 3 to 6 years old in Kedah. The same questionnaire was delivered at each phase and they underwent the intervention program of hand washing. Their performance in hand washing was measured and evaluated using a questionnaire and checklist. The results of the study revealed a significant difference (p<0.05) in mean preschoolers' children score on knowledge and practice before and after participated in the intervention program. Overall, preschoolers' knowledge and practice of handwashing were significantly (p<0.05) improved by the intervention program. However, as the participants were young children, it is important to emphasize the consistency of reinforcement of knowledge and regular practices of hand hygiene.
