Abstract/Notes: It was hypothesized that the Montessori curriculum accelerates the acquisition of a number of concrete operational skills. To test this, eighty 4-year-old children were given three Piagetian problems—seriation, classification, and conservation. Half of the subjects were from Montessori schools, and the other half were from more traditional nursery settings. Within each type of school, half of the children were first year and the other half were second year enrollees. Results showed that significantly more Montessori than traditional children seriated and classified objects like concrete thinkers but that there were no differences on the conservation problem. Year of enrollment did not influence performance on any of the tasks. It was concluded that the hypothesis was confirmed and that the failure to find acceleration of conservation performance was due to its advanced nature relative to the other problems and/or the tangential manner in which Montessori exercises deal with the critical concepts that underly it.

Abstract/Notes: In two independent experiments, the performance of 4-year-old children drawn from Montessori classrooms was compared with that of children attending traditional preschools. It was speculated that the Montessori children might excel in social cognitive reasoning and in memory—both indirect consequences of the cognitive skills targeted by the curriculum. In Experiment 1, there were three social cognitive tasks—referential communication, speech differentiation, and identifying emotions. In Experiment 2, there were two memory problems—recognition of logically related objects, and free recall. There was no evidence of a difference in the level of performance of children from the two types of schools on social cognitive tasks, and both groups recoded messages more effectively to explicit requests from the listener than to implicit ones. For memory, the Montessori children excelled on the recognition problem, but there was no difference between groups on free recall. It was concluded that the Montessori curriculum does influence cognitive development beyond the narrow bounds of the cognitive skills ostensibly taught in the classroom, but the impact is greatest where there is a close relation between the specific concepts learned in class and the skill in question.

Abstract/Notes: This study aims to activate The Realities of Cooking classes and develop various cooking activities, consequently providing educational effect. For this purpose, status of The Realities of Cooking classes in nursery facilities located in Gangwon province was researched. For the study, questionnaires were mailed to 500 teachers working in private and corporate nurseries with over 21 children all the time. It tried to see how The Realities of Cooking classes in the nurseries were influenced by background variables (working place, age, class age, career). The result shows that, according to the background variables (working place, age, class age, career), there are significant differences in educational schedule, the number of class, those who select and plan cooking activities, progress of The Realities of Cooking classes, existence of children cooking instruction certificate or license, educational material for the classes and envirorunental composition of cooking room for cooking activities.
