Abstract/Notes: In my study I examined the practices of Montessori educators in motivating children in a classroom setting. I interviewed 6 Montessori educators from various schools in the eastern, southern and northern parts of Ontario to share their first hand experiences and knowledge. Although these Montessori educators believe that intrinsic motivation without extrinsic should be sufficient motivation the results from the study indicated that 5 of these 6 teachers employ both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to keep the children on task and interested in their work. The findings indicate that only 1 educator utilizes intrinsic motivation exclusively. The results indicate that 5 of the 6 participants believe that children require the addition of external factors, such as praise, achievement levels and stickers, free and self directed time to motivate students to complete their work.

Abstract/Notes: The article informs the reader with the program of Montessori education and application of principles of Montessori education in conditions of Czech pre-schools (kindergartens). The authors focus on the formulation of the principles of this form of alternative education based on the study of works by M. Montessori and they further use them to research the level of social skills of pre-school children. Due to a fact that the educational approach at a Montessori kindergarten and a regular kindergarten differs, the authors also focus on the comparison of social skills among pre-school children of kindergartens of both abovementioned types. The quantitative design of the research was used. The questionnaires were submitted to 7 kindergartens: in 5 of them, children were educated by the principles of Montessori education, 2 of them were regular. The results linked to the pre-school children’s level of social skills were compared not only from the perspective of the type of kindergarten, but also from the perspective of children’s gender, siblings or the age when they started to attend the pre-school education.

Children's Well-Being in Traditional vs. Montessori Schools: A Test of Self-Determination Theory
See More
Abstract/Notes: The present study is a test of Self -Determination theory, which is well established in the field of education with a huge body of empirical evidence to support its assumptions that when the three universal psychological needs (Autonomy, Competence & Relatedness) of a child are met they will grow and function optimally leading to enhanced well-being. It is evident that Montessori philosophy is overlapping with the components of SDT. This study was conducted to examine the extent to which the three psychological needs are satisfied in Montessori schools in comparison to the Traditional schools. A purposive sample size of 80 children in elementary grades was selected from both Montessori and Traditional schools. Perceived support experienced by the children and their Well-Being was determined to establish the assumption of the SDT. The results showed that children in Montessori schools experienced greater satisfaction of needs when compared to traditional school children. However, the well-being of children from both school types didn’t vary much and the causes can be attributed to factors outside classroom. These findings have some strong implications for policy makers, educators and parents.
