A Comparison of Preschool Competencies Required by Thai Curriculum as Realized in a United States Play-Oriented Program and a Montessori Program

Abstract/Notes: This research involved observing children in two programs, Montessori and play-oriented program, in order to determine the extent of children's opportunity to develop competency according to their choice of activities and to identify which program provided more appropriate activities for Thai children. The results showed that children in a play-oriented program had more opportunity to develop competency in language, social science, motor skill, eye-hand coordination, shape and size recognition and discrimination, creativity, problem solving, and imagination than did children in a Montessori program. However, children in a Montessori program had more opportunity to develop competency in mathematics and science than did children in a play-oriented program. Thus, it would be necessary to combine activities from both programs in the Thai curriculum.

Katherine Moore, teacher of the Montessori classes in the public schools of Los Angeles and a graduate of the first class of Dr. Montessori, will conduct a demonstration Montessori class each forenoon [morning] from nine to twelve o'clock during the session of the National Education Association, in the Art Room, City Auditorium [Oakland Municipal Auditorium]. The afternoon session began at 2:00 O'Clock and included: "Round Table under the Auspices of the National Education Association and of the San Francisco Local Committee of Advisory Patrons" with David Starr Jordan (President, National Education Association, Stanford University, California) presiding over "Questions and Discussions by Leading American Educators and Dr. Montessori". Abstract/Notes: Cette recherche avait pour objectif de mettre en perspective le programme préscolaire québécois (MEQ, 1997) et le programme préscolaire issu du modèle pédagogique montessorien (Pédagogie Scientifique, 1958), dans le but de dégager les similitudes et les particularités de leurs contenus liés au domaine psychomoteur. Une analyse globale des problèmes généraux liés à l'éducation préscolaire et un bref rappel du contexte actuel de l'éducation préscolaire au Québec et ailleurs, nous a permis de faire ressortir les infrastructures qui posent problèmes au niveau préscolaire et qui sont en interrelation constante à savoir: les besoins de l'enfant d'âge préscolaire, les objectifs des programmes qui leur sont destinés, les méthodes et techniques utilisées. Le mode d'évaluation des enfants au préscolaire justifie la problématique de recherche et la prise en compte de l'aspect psychomoteur dans cette recherche. Nous avons élaboré une grille d'analyse visant à dégager les contenus liés au domaine psychomoteur de chacun des programmes analysés. La comparaison des deux programmes nous a permis de faire ressortir de nombreux contenus portant sur la psychomotricité. Les résultats de la présente recherche ont permis de révéler l'existence de certaines divergences et convergences entre les éléments liés au domaine psychomoteur, soit par rapport à leur valeur sémantique, soit par rapport à l'échelle de valeur qui leur est accordée dans chacun des programmes respectifs. En outre, nous avons pu constater la pertinence du choix méthodologique que nous avons fait de recourir à une démarche inspirée de l'analyse systémique lors de la comparaison et de l'analyse des programmes en question. Autour de cette assise sont apparus des éléments que nous pouvons qualifier d'invariants: l'intervenant, l'enfant, la méthode, le matériel et les techniques d'enseignement, d'apprentissage et d'évaluation. Enfin le présent travail met en évidence la problématique toujours actuelle de l'intervention pédagogique au préscolaire et de l'application des programmes. Il ouvre aussi des avenues pour de possibles recherches quant à la problématique des contenus des programmes et de leur application, particulièrement au niveau préscolaire.

Abstract/Notes: The main target of my essay is to find out and to clarify the meaning of “elements of Montessori pedagogy”. The theoretic part of the essay contains entrance to the theme, information about life and pedagogic work of Marie Montessori, explanation and closer understanding of intention and philosophy of pedagogy Marie Montessori. In this essay is describing principals of Montessori pedagogy. There is five parts which are used for Montessori pedagogy. Theoretic part of this essay also includes description of the main documents for kindergarten, which means framework and school education program. The essay is donated to explanation of poems principal and element from the pedagogic and lexicon view. In practical part of this essay is the purpose to find out what it “element of Montessori pedagogy” is and how this poem “elements” understanding managers and pedagogues of selected kindergartens and also the member of company Montessori o.s. Many of kindergartens in these days proclaim use of elements of Montessori pedagogy, but Montessori pedagogy only works with poem “principals”. The target is to find out the elements composing into the school education program for preschool education. ůnother target is to find out how pedagogic works in practice in kindergartens with “Montessori elements”. The essay explains how schools and teachers understand the original intention of the Montessori direction.

Abstract/Notes: This Master's thesis examines options to advance reading literacy in schools with alternative education. Thesis is focused on teachers work and used methods. The aim of the thesis was to determine, how schools using alternative educational programs support the reading literacy. Theoretical part explores reading literacy, characteristics of alternative educational programs and schools -Montessori, Waldorf, Dalton and program Step by Step. It specifies RWCT - reading and writing to critical thinking program and method of advancement reading literacy and reading. The practical part evaluates surveys filled by teachers from alternative schools and teachers using alternative educational programs. Survey is focused on teacher's job, utilization of RWCT method in schools, working with reading literacy and support of reading. / Tato diplomová práce zkoumá možnosti rozvoje čtenářské gramotnosti ve školách s alternativním vzdělávacím programem. Zaměřuje se na práci učitelů a metody, které při výuce používají. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jak vybrané školy s alternativním vzdělávacím programem podporují rozvoj čtenářské gramotnosti. Teoretická část diplomové práce se zabývá problematikou čtenářské gramotnosti, charakteristikou vybraných vzdělávacích alternativních programů a škol - Montessori, Waldorfské školy, Daltonské školy, program Začít spolu. Specifikuje program RWCT (reading and writing to critical thinking), zejména metody rozvoje čtenářské gramotnosti a čtenářství. Praktická část vyhodnocuje dotazníkové šetření, směrované učitelům na alternativních školách a pedagogům, kteří se zabývají alternativními vzdělávacími programy. Dotazník je zaměřen na práci učitelů, využití metod RWCT ve školách, práci s čtenářskou gramotností a podporu čtenářství.

Abstract/Notes: Bu araştırma Montessori eğitim yöntemi ile okulöncesi eğitim alan ve anneleri "Montessori Anne Destek Programı"na katılmış deney grubu çocuklar ile "Pür Montessori" eğitimi alan 4-5 yaş kontrol grubu çocukların matematik ve günlük yaşam becerilerine etkisini incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Çalışma grubunda, 2016-2017 öğretim yılında Konya ilinde bulunan Selçuk Üniversitesi, Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi, İhsan Doğramacı Uygulama Anaokuluna devam eden Montessori yöntemi ile okulöncesi eğitim alan, 8 deney, 11 kontrol olmak üzere toplam19 çocuk yer almıştır. Araştırmada deney ve kontrol gruplarından veri toplama aracı olarak Temel Okul Becerileri Envanteri Matematik ve Günlük Yaşam Becerileri alt Testi Uygulanmıştır. Testler çocuklara öğretmenleri tarafından deneme öncesi ve sonrası uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca deneme grubuna eğitim programı bittikten 12 hafta sonra tekrar uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen verilerin analizinde Mann Whitney U ve Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar Testi uygulanmıştır. İncelenen bulgular deneme ve kontrol grubu arasında sontest puan ortalamaları arasındaMatematik de deneme grubu lehine anlamlı bir farklılaşma görülmüştür. Günlük Yaşam Becerileri sontest değerlendirmelerinde ise bir farklılaşma bulunamamıştır. Deneme grubu çocukların TOBEMAT ve TOBEGYBAT testi sontest ve izleme testi puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir farklılaşma olmamıştır. / This research aimed to investigate the effects of Montessori education method on the mathematics and daily life skills of the children who took the preschool education and the mothers of the experimental group participated in the "Montessori Mother Support Program" and the children of the control group of 4-5 age "Pure Montessori". In the study group, 19th Montessori method, which took place in Selcuk University, Faculty of Health Sciences, İhsan Doğramacı Application Nursing School, located in Konya province in the 2016-2017 school year, took place. The Basic School Skills Inventory Mathematics and Daily Life Skills Sub-Test was applied as a data collection tool in the study. Tests were administered to children before and after the test by their teachers. In addition, the experimental group was reapplied 12 weeks after the end of the training program. Mann Whitney U and Wilcoxon Marked Ranks Test were applied in the analysis of the data obtained in the research. A significant difference was found in the mean scores of the post test scores between the findings and control groups examined in favor of the experimental group in Mathematics. In Daily Life Skills posttest evaluations, no differentiation was found. There was no significant difference between the BSSI-MAT and BSSI-DLS test posttest and follow-up test scores of the children in the experimental group.
