Abstract/Notes: This article draws on Martha Nussbaum's distinction between basic, internal, and external (or combined) capacities to better specify possible locations for children's ‘incapacity’ for autonomy. I then examine Maria Montessori's work on what she calls ‘normalization’, which involves a release of children's capacities for autonomy and self-governance made possible by being provided with the right kind of environment. Using Montessori, I argue that, in contrast to many ordinary and philosophical assumptions, children's incapacities for autonomy are best understood as consequences of an absence of external conditions necessary for children to exercise capacities they already have internally, rather than intrinsic limitations based on their stage of life. In a closing section, I show how Montessori proposes a model wherein both children and adults have autonomy, power, and responsibility, but over different spheres, and suggest implications of these differences for who has responsibility for establishing the conditions under which children can flourish.

Montessori method of education

Abstract/Notes: In accordance with the constructivist concept of didactics, the teacher’s duty is to support students in acquiring tools for understanding the world and building resources of their own knowledge and skills. On the other hand, the task of education is to help each individual in developing his ability to become a holistic human being, not just a tool for economics. The charge directed most often towards the Polish school is failure to perform this task, which is manifested by the poor preparation of young people to live and work, to the development challenges, but also the threats of the modern world. It is worth looking for solutions that will create opportunities for children and young people to develop according to their abilities. One of such solutions has the pedagogy of Maria Montessori emphasizing the importance of the child’s activity in the process of learning. The article compared briefly the hebratism with the trend of “new upbringing” to which Maria Montessori’s pedagogy is included, and further considerations have been referred to the modern knowledge of how the brain is taught.

Abstract/Notes: This contribution aims to investigate and reconstruct - analysing the issues of the magazine “La Coltura Popolare” - the important role played by the Società Umanitaria in the spread of outdoor education as a children’s right, during a very lively and pedagogically significant period of the Milanese history. The paper will be concentrated on two main focuses: the first is the promotion of open-air schools, with the accurate reflection and systematization of the main Italian and European examples as hosted in the pages of the aforementioned journal; the latter is the Società Umanitaria’s commitment to disseminating the Montessori method as an approach that underlines the value of outdoor education. As can be seen through the numerous excerpts from the journal articles proposed here, the debate on outdoor education at the beginning of the Twentieth century, with its precious heritage of insights and sometimes pioneering practices, offers a valuable reference for gaining a deeper awareness of outdoor education as it is conceived and practiced today.
