The Impact of Anti-Bias Literature Small Groups on Children's Understanding of Themselves, their Families, and Others

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this action research study was to explore how sharing anti-bias children’s books in literature small groups in a lower elementary Montessori class affects children’s perceptions of and ability to communicate about themselves, their families, and others, as well as the classmates with whom they choose to associate. The sample studied in this research was a class of 20 children aged six to nine at a private Montessori school located in a small town adjacent to a large Midwestern city. Data was collected through pre and post oral interviews, written reading reflection worksheets, and daily teacher observations of children’s work and play partners. The study found that anti-bias literature small groups are an effective way to improve children’s perceptions of themselves and their ability to communicate about human difference. More research is needed about how to improve children’s perceptions of their families and their ability to communicate about human similarity. Additionally, a longer intervention period and refined data collection tool are recommended in order to learn more about the impact of anti-bias literature small groups on children’s choice of work and play partners.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of the Montessori approach on the IQ of 5-year old children. To do this, a sample of 80 5-year old children (40 children from the traditional kindergartens and 40 ones from a Montessori-regulated kindergarten) were randomly selected from different kindergartens in Shiraz, Iran, based on a simple random selection (for Montessori system) and a multi-stage selection (for the traditional system). Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (RMP) test was used to measure participants’ IQ levels. Then Vineland Social Maturity scale was used. The data collected for testing hypotheses was then analyzed using the independent-samples t-test on dependent samples. Results showed that the IQ and the level of the 5-year old children educated through the Montessori approach was substantially higher than that of the children educated based on the traditional approach. The study suggested that education system (Montessori or traditional) had affected the children's IQ and social maturity growth level.

How Does Parent Nutrition Education Change What Children Bring for Lunch?

Abstract/Notes: The intent of this action research was to see if parent nutrition education changed what parents packed in their children’s lunches. This study was conducted at a Colorado Montessori school enrolling infants through kindergartners. Data sources included teacher observation before and after the nutrition classes, a pre-class parental survey on nutrition knowledge and topic needs, a teacher journal, and a post-class evaluation. Results showed that after the class, five out of seven students’ lunches changed 20 to 60%. Parents incorporated ideas learned from the class and ways to entice picky eaters. Based on this action research project, the school is implementing a hot lunch program. I initiated a monthly food club to teach parents ways to cook multiple meals from a basic staple, explore ethnic cuisines, and share recipes.

Abstract/Notes: Paola Trabalzini gives an enlightening introduction to Maria Montessori’s Literary Experiment to introduce the poetry of Dante to children, initially to adolescents of 12-14, but later also 10-year olds embraced the study of Inferno [Hell]. Ms Trabalzini demonstrates that this lecture elucidates how the understanding of Dante's work follows a free and natural course, in which the children put forward proposals for new activities to answer their need to know; proposals which originate from the inner learning process experienced by the children with energy and enthusiasm. The essence is, as in all aspects of Montessori education, that this perfectly proves the case for auto-education.
