Abstract/Notes: Dynamic changes taking place in the contemporary social reality pose new challenges for Polish schools. The necessity to depart from a deep-rooted educational tradition and a school model which does not suit the current conditions prompts the search for alternative solutions. Consequently, for several years there has been an increase in interest in various educational offers, and education in line with the assumptions of Maria Montessori’s pedagogical concept has an important place among them. The educational process realized in Montessori institutions based on the child’s activity, subjective treatment of the pupil, respect for his individual needs, abilities and interests, support for his versatile development become a catalyst for self-development, self-education and self-training, which are so much expected from the contemporary generation of students. However, the growing popularity of Montessori institutions raises the question of how much their choice is the result of parents’ rational decision and real conviction about the value of the Montessori education system. The analysis of the empirical material gathered for this study revealed the surveyed parents’ motives for selecting a kindergarten facility for their child, as well as their expectations and opinions about education in the kindergarten working on the basis of Maria Montessori pedagogy. / Dynamiczne zmiany zachodzące we współczesnej rzeczywistości społecznej stawiają nowe wyzwania przed polskim szkolnictwem.

Abstract/Notes: İtalyan eğitim felsefesi uzmanı Maria Montessori 1970 yılında İtalya Ancora’da dünyaya gelmiştir. [Italian pedagogue Maria Montessori was born in 1970 in Ancona, Italy. The Montessori education system, which has been used for over a century, was developed by Maria Montessori. With this education system, where there is no restriction, a free education is offered to children. Today, trainers are trained by the International Montessori Association in England in order to provide Montessori education. This education goes up to kindergarten, primary school and in some countries high school level. Maria Montessori determined what the children liked and disliked in her observations while working with non-disabled children in the first children's home “Casa dei Bambini” in 1907. Maria Montessori observed that children: they do not like rewards, punishments, toys, teacher's desk, group lessons, they like free choice, control over their mistakes, silence, establishing social relations by themselves, reading and writing without books. In Montessori education, where children see themselves as individuals, family, teacher and student are in cooperation. Education is given in line with the student's learning pace and knowledge is learned by groping, not by mind. It is ensured that abstract concepts are understood with concrete concepts. Montessori education primarily focuses on the formation of personality. Maria Montessori expresses this clearly as follows: “In education, not the method, but the human personality is taken into consideration.”]

Abstract/Notes: The complex history of Montessori’s Method spreading in the United States was signed by some misunderstandings connected with the reform of the american education system. The Method wasn’t understood in its specificity, but it appeared, in the same time, an alternative or an application of the tradition of Froebel’s Kindergarten. In those years the American pedagogical reflection tried to create an alternative to the continental tradition. For this reason the Progressive Education critized Montessori (i.e. Kilpatrick) for her spiritual and metaphysical premises but this movement couldn’t realize this project and it was inevitably connected with the tradition of European Activism.
