Abstract/Notes: The research project focuses on a central element of the Montessori Pedagogy scarcely examined in the literature or by the scientific research, the teacher, and aims to analyse the figure of kindergarten and primary teachers currently working in European Montessori schools. Despite the worldwide diffusion of the Method and the actual renaissance this pedagogy is experiencing (Whitescarver & Cossentino, 2008), the study starts from the awareness of the lack of data in reference population records and the interest in contributing to fill this gap through a mainly descriptive research. The research outlines key characteristics of the figure of the teacher according to Maria Montessori through a bibliographic analysis, then, on the basis of these, describes and analyses the profile and the professional identity of the European Montessori teachers, reconstructed by an explorative study, conducted by the instrument of the survey. Admittedly adopting specifically quantitative methods due to the sample numerosity, the conceived questionnaire gives voice to the subjects, explores the subjective dimensions, the opinions and self-perceptions of the teachers and what each individual understands under its own professional identity. Overall, the main research questions can be summarized as follows: I. Which are the teacher characteristics for Montessori? II. Montessori schools and teachers in Europe: which data are available? III. Which are the education, the profile and the professional identity of the European Montessori teachers? IV. Beyond differences a common identity emerges? To which extent corresponds to Montessori recommendations? In particular, the elements of coherence or evolution of this emerging figure compared to Dr. Montessori own guidelines are investigated, moreover, the specific training process required to Montessori educators is deepen in order to verify if this may be regarded as a transformative learning. The PhD thesis consists of four parts. In the first one, the state of the art on the issue addressed is reviewed, considering Italian and foreign contributions and synthesizing the international research currently available data, both about European Montessori schools and the teachers who work in such contexts. In the second chapter the research project, the theoretical framework, the methods and instruments adopted, the phases carried out, are presented in detail, concluding the discussion with some observations on emerging challenges. The third chapter is entirely devoted to an analysis of literature, defining the figure of the Montessori teacher on the basis of the main writings of Montessori. The next section presents the data collected on profile and professional identity of Montessori European teachers, analysing the answers to the online questionnaire both at the general level and with a particular focus on Italian teachers answers, with a special focus on descriptive aspects as well as on the analysis of correlations emerged between some variables under consideration, before moving to synthetic conclusions.

Abstract/Notes: This contribution aims to reconstruct the network of national and international relations which contributed to the return of Maria Montessori to Italy in May 1947 and to the establishment of a Centro di Studi Pedagogici in order to create the conditions for a permanent residence of the scientist in her country. The reconstitution of the Opera Nazionale Montessori and the activities of its president Maria de Unterrichter Jervolino in collaboration with leading personalities of Italian political and cultural life and with the ‘historical’ students of Montessori are placed in this context. Abstract/Notes: In the first two decades of the Twentieth Century, reflections on teacher training were particularly rich, implying the lively and significant participation of a plurality of actors. Even Maria Montessori actively participated in this debate and the meeting with the Humanitarian Society in Milan, and with Augusto Osimo primarily, proved to be very fruitful on these issues. The specialist magazine La Coltura Popolare represents a faithful and interesting mirror of this relationship and of the many reflections and initiatives arose from it, promoting the propagation of the Montessori method and offering at the same time a space for dialogue and comparison of all the most innovative and vivifying voices of the pedagogical reflection of the time. This paper proposes a first and partial reconstruction of the significant role that La Coltura Popolare played, from 1911 to 1922, in soliciting the attention of its public on the topic of teacher training, in spreading the Montessori method, in stimulating a not biased and preconceived comparison between different approaches, experiments and views on childhood.

In this paper the aspects characterizing Montessori teacher’s profile are presented as they are defined in the Maria Montessori’s writings and how it is built their formation in connection to it. The Montessori teacher teaches little and observes much; she has to arrange a suitable environment to direct the activities of the children, she must approach them with humility and patience, aware that they are the protagonists of their own growth. This attitude derives not so much from a theoretical education culture, but from observation and supervision as well as from the expert teachers who help the future teacher to support a long process of inner reflection and spiritual elevation.
