Abstract/Notes: The late 1920s and early 1930s in Italy saw the peak of a process establishing Montessori pedagogy which would come to an end within a decade with the drastic closure of all Montessori schools in the country. This epilogue, which would also be seen in those years in other countries with a similar political regime, calls for an analysis of the relations between the creator of the most famous and widespread pedagogical method in the world and the political regime that favoured the application and dissemination of the method in Italy - a country in which it had still not encountered those conditions of realisation that would instead come about in the crucial years of the rise of Fascism and the completion of the totalitarian state. The essay examines the main events marking the history of Montessori’s conflictual relationship with Fascism in the years 1924-1934, from the initial contacts characterising it and leading up to the final break, after which Montessori finally left Italy until the end of World War II.

Abstract/Notes: Following the more recent and up-to-date literary criticism, the article outlines the biog- raphy and the complicated cultural and scientific route of Maria Montessori. The main stages of her psycho-pedagogical works are underlined, as well as the origin and develop- ment of the enterprise she furthered in special education and in children’s care. Through the analysis of a large review of both traditional and recent studies about Maria Montessori and her work, it stands out the Montessorian conception of a scientific pedagogy. This one, based on the Positivistic culture, is not extraneous to other influences, such as the Itard’s Sensism, and the theosophical suggestions about an aesthetic and moral perfecting of the human being through the exercising of his sensibility. The Montessori’s idea of spir- itual embryo can be referred to the Neo-evolutionist theories and to religious contamina- tions from different sources. It is so possible to outline the eclectic connotation of the anthropological – and then psycho-pedagogical – thought that the researcher and peda- gogue Maria Montessori had worked out.

This article aims to reconstruct the role played by the Società Umanitaria (Humanitarian Society), based in Milan, in spreading the Montessori method. The period under study spans from 1908, the year of the initial mediation of the Women’s Union’s members for the creation of the first Children’s Houses in the Società Umanitaria’s district, until 1923, the year of Augusto Osimo’s death, the general secretary of this institution. In particular, through the analysis of Maria Montessori and Augusto Osimo’s correspondence, the author highlights the complex history of their fruitful collaboration, which materialized with the organization of Montessori training courses by the Società Umanitaria. Their cooperation was further reinvigorated by a common cause, namely support for children who were victims of the war.
