Abstract/Notes: An essential resource for all students and scholars of early childhood education, this book offers a rich array of material about Maria Montessori and the Montessori Method. Distinguished education scholar Gerald Gutek begins with an in-depth biography of Montessori, exploring how a determined young woman overcame the obstacles that blocked her educational and career opportunities in Italy during the late Victorian age. The author then analyzes the sources and influences that shaped the Montessori philosophy of education. After laying the foundation for Montessori's development, Gutek presents an annotated and abridged edition of The Montessori Method (1912), the seminal work that introduced her educational innovations to a U.S. audience. The book concludes with key historical documents, including disciple Anne E. George's notes on the Montessori lectures and William H. Kilpatrick's critique of the Montessori method. Preserving the historical context of Montessori's contribution, Gutek also shows the continuing relevance of her thought to educational reform in the twenty-first century.

A Multi-Age, Multi-Ability, Thematically Taught, Full Inclusion Approach to Education: A Model Summer Educational Program.

Abstract/Notes: This paper describes a summer remedial program for third- and fifth-grade students administered by Valdosta State University in Georgia. The program utilizes a multi-age, multi-ability, thematic, and full-inclusion approach. Assessment of the program was based on data collected through interviews with 18 students and a survey of 28 parents. Both groups reported that they enjoyed the program. The high level of student involvement and students' descriptions of the program as "fun" validated the program's hands-on approach. The following recommendations are made for the education of K-7 students: (1) use a hands-on approach to increase student involvement; (2) develop different avenues for parent involvement; (3) incorporate the thematic approach into the instructional process; and (4) consider alternative classroom designs in meeting students' needs. Copies of the interview guide and survey are included.

Abstract/Notes: Martha Urioste tells a compelling history of public sector Montessori in Denver, from its socially charged beginnings in the 1960s to 2009. She played a huge role in creating the first public Montessori school in Colorado that was launched as an integration model with bilingual classes and staff [Family Star Montessori School]. This inspirational story begins with her early bilingual educational assignments in public schools, her exposure to Montessori teaching, and continues through a nine-year process called "Ten Steps to Montessori Implementation" where her mission for integrated, bilingual, public Montessori was supported with unparalleled parent enthusiasm. Abstract/Notes: Joachim Dattke inspires the reader to consider how a truly inclusive society is beneficial for both typical children and children with disabilities. Five essential components are defined for planning inclusive schools, and the key features of a Montessori model are discussed. The first inclusion-by-design school in the world (Munich, Germany), named Aktion Sonnenschein, was created through a collaboration between the founder, Theodor Hellbrügge, and Mario Montessori. From the beginning, this model integrated the key features of Montessori education into the pioneering field of social pediatrics.
