Abstract/Notes: Although Montessori's name is almost universally known in education circles today, and there are countless nursery schools throughout the world using the "Montessori Method," the real core of her thinking has remained largely misunderstood. Most people regard the method as a system for the education of very young children. And most who have some direct experience of it, either as parent or teacher, would regard it as involving a certain set of procedures and specialized educational materials with clear and elaborate instructions for their use. However, the essence of Montessori's philosophy of education is in reality far broader than this, and contains a powerful message for educators everywhere. What is less well-known about Montessori's work is that she began by establishing the effectiveness of her approach at the pre-elementary level, but also strongly encouraged the extension of her method to the higher levels of education. Wentworth's purpose in writing this book is to elucidate this vital aspect of Maria Montessori's life's work and to show how it applies to real-life teaching situations. She believed that by transforming the process of children's education she could help to transform the attitudes of the adults they will later become, and so those of society and the world at large--a message she promoted as vitally relevant to the future of humankind as a whole.

Nine-Year Follow-Up Study of Montessori Education

Abstract/Notes: Results of an earlier six-year followup study demonstrated that a group of children with four years of Montessori education, including preschool and primary . school, score best on all seven variables of the third grade level Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT). The group with no preschool experience scored lowest on five of seven variables of the test. The children in the highest scoring group had been in at least two different Montessori schools with as many as three different teachers. The strong positive results indicate that the common elements of the Montessori philosophy withstood the exigencies of being set forth by several teachers. The purpose of this nine-year followup is to investigate whether these positive effects are maintained up to sixth grade level. Twenty-eight of the 77 students evaluated at the third grade in the earlier study are again compared on MAT scores. Although no statistically significant results are obtained, those groups of children who had early Montessori training generally score higher on sub-tests of the MAT administered at sixth grade level than do those children who had Head Start or no preschool. Results obtained on the third grade MAT of those same children show similar but more brilliant results. Results of the study tend to re-confirm the importance of preschool experience for disadvantaged children. Research questions are listed. (Author/AM)

Abstract/Notes: The article explores the educational value that Ellen Key (1849-1926), Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) and Maria Montessori (1870-1952) attributed to children's stories. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century these three important authors contributed to the renewal of the educational theories and practices. They dedicated a part of their pedagogical reflections to the educational meanings of children's stories; consider, e.g., the many pages of Ellen Key on children's literature, the recommendations of Rudolf Steiner on the educational relevance of fairy tales and mythology or, finally, Maria Montessori's reflections on fairy tales. The article examines these ideas from a historical and pedagogical point of view.

Abstract/Notes: İtalyan eğitim felsefesi uzmanı Maria Montessori 1970 yılında İtalya Ancora’da dünyaya gelmiştir. Yüzyılı aşkın süredir kullanılan Montessori eğitim sistemi Maria Montessori tarafından geliştirilmiştir. Herhangi bir sınırlamanın bulunmadığı bu eğitim sistemiyle çocuklara özgür bir eğitim sunulur. Günümüzde Montessori eğitimlerini verebilmek amacıyla İngiltere’de bulunan Uluslararası Montessori Derneği tarafından eğitmen yetiştirilmektedir. Bu eğitim anaokulu, ilkokul ve bazı ülkelerde lise seviyesine kadar çıkmaktadır. Maria Montessori 1907 yılında ilk çocukevi “Casa dei Bambini”de engelli olmayan çocuklarla çalışmalarında yaptığı gözlemlerde çocukların nelerden hoşlandıklarını ve nelerden hoşlanmadıklarını saptar. Maria Montessori çocukların: ödüllerden, cezalardan,oyuncaklardan, öğretmen masasından,toplu derslerden hoşlanmadıklarını, özgür seçimden, hatalarını kendilerin denetiminden, sessizlikten, sosyal ilişkilerini kendileri tarafından kurmasından, kitapsız okuma ve yazmadan hoşlandıklarını gözlemledi. Çocukların kendilerini birey olarak görmesinin sağlandığı Montessori eğitiminde aile, öyretmen ve öyrenci iş birliği içerisindedir. Öğrencinin öyrenme hızı doğrultusunda eğitim verilir ve bilgi akılla değil el yordamıyla öğrenilir.Soyut kavramların somut kavramlarla anlaşılması sağlanır. Montessori eğitimi emelde kişiliğin oluşumu üzerinde durmaktadır. Maria Montessori bunu açıkça şu şekilde ifade etmektedir:” Eğitimde metot değil,insan kişiliği göz önüne alınmaktadır.” [Italian pedagogue Maria Montessori was born in 1970 in Ancona, Italy. The Montessori education system, which has been used for over a century, was developed by Maria Montessori. With this education system, where there is no restriction, a free education is offered to children. Today, trainers are trained by the International Montessori Association in England in order to provide Montessori education. This education goes up to kindergarten, primary school and in some countries high school level. Maria Montessori determined what the children liked and disliked in her observations while working with non-disabled children in the first children's home “Casa dei Bambini” in 1907. Maria Montessori observed that children: they do not like rewards, punishments, toys, teacher's desk, group lessons, they like free choice, control over their mistakes, silence, establishing social relations by themselves, reading and writing without books. In Montessori education, where children see themselves as individuals, family, teacher and student are in cooperation. Education is given in line with the student's learning pace and knowledge is learned by groping, not by mind. It is ensured that abstract concepts are understood with concrete concepts. Montessori education primarily focuses on the formation of personality. Maria Montessori expresses this clearly as follows: “In education, not the method, but the human personality is taken into consideration.”]
