Bilingualism

Abstract/Notes: This article describes the Language Center Montessori School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where students are learning in a language-immersion Montessori environment. The school offers a choice to parents--Spanish immersion or French immersion--but Montessori comes with both. The school's motivation for promoting bilingualism is to improve communication across cultural boundaries, and to promote peace, respect, and an appreciation of diversity. Though bilingualism may increase cognitive development, this is not the school's driving force. It wants to foster a generation of "cultural ambassadors" who can build bridges across cultures. It also wants to create a new generation of peacemakers who value tolerance, diversity, and hope, and who effect change at home and across borders.

Abstract/Notes: This article discusses how Montessori teachers create authentic and meaningful experiences for older students in the modern technological age while fostering the sensitive stages of imagination and exploration of the world around them. Maria Montessori observed that children learn to read and write through their spontaneous, independent behavior. She also noted that children wrote first and then read and were able to perform both activities at a younger age than expected. The fundamental philosophies developed from Maria Montessori's observations of the child led two Montessori teachers, Heidi Larson and Kevin Tseng, to develop the idea of sharing lessons between children in different countries in order to foster the children's desire for learning. Together Tseng and Larson developed a program called The 3M Project: Virtual Tools for Authentic Experiences, which would bring their two classes together virtually. This article also discusses how Larson and Tseng managed the project.
