Currently, the learning of school mathematics has become a latent problem, generated by various factors, including the methods used by the teacher. The objective of the research was to establish the influence of the Montessori method in strengthening logical-mathematical thinking in third grade infants, in a Colombian educational institution. The methodology was quantitative, with a quasi-experimental design; the infor-mation was collected in a field diary by direct observation and an entry-exit test; the data were processed with the SPSS software and the hypotheses were verified with the Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the Montessori method, embodied in a didactic sequence, significantly influenced student learning associated with the operations of addition and multiplication with natural numbers. It is concluded that this method promotes meaningful learning in schoolchildren, based on experiences and discoveries.

Abstract/Notes: This paper presents an updated list of schools that report applying the Montessori method in Catalonia. To introduce the study, the paper recalls the historical background to the arrival and the development of the Montessori method in region, a process abruptly interrupted by the civil war. After providing the historical context, the paper presents the results of an empirical survey that, based on different sources, identifies the Montessori schools in Catalonia and estimates the number of pupils who have studied there in recent years. The survey identifies 22 Montessori schools, of which: a) five are affiliated to the AME (the Spanish Montessori Association); b) 13 that are not affiliated, but have Montessori-trained teachers and appear to have chosen an exclusively or predominantly Montessori education; and c) four that have opted for a Montessori education integrated with other educational approaches. The study suggests the need to continue monitoring the development, quality and effectiveness of the application of the Montessori method in Catalonia, in order to promote an educational philosophy which underwent a significant development here and which, today, is experiencing a renewal.

[This paper analyzes the historical production of a kind of school knowledge that enabled the education of preschoolers and the formation of the preschool or nursery school teacher at Colegio María Auxiliadora of Medellin, by means of the appropriation of Pestalozzi, Fröebel and Montessori methods. Methodologically, this pedagogical practice was studied from a historical approach; additionally, some archeogenealogical tools were used. The contents of the text are developed in three moments: the first analyzes the emergence of the nursery school teacher, the second examines the institutionalization of early childhood teaching as the first instructional level, and a third moment rewrites the discourses and practices of early childhood education and preschool teacher training. The findings include the power-knowledge tensions that occurred in the context of catholic pedagogy, a characterization of the knowledge considered necessary for the education of preschoolers, and the configuration of the Early Childhood Pedagogy Program for the training of preschool teachers. In conclusion, some uses of the educational experience of the present Salesian kindergarten are related, recurring to the notion of active memory of pedagogical knowledge, that will allow the future reconceptualization of early education.]

Abstract/Notes: This reflection paper is the result of an analytical exercise around the experiences of Maria Montessori as a scholar and feminist woman between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Following a chronological order —not necessarily linear— of the most significant historical aspects analyzed in the light of different sources of study (conferences, books, research, articles, among others), it is intended to highlight the particular influence of the pedagogical elaborations of a woman in the educational field; a woman who lived in a time when social and cultural reality only valued the female role as a homemaker and denied their value in science, still, she manages to venture into the academic and research territory. I present comments and reflections of this excursus aiming to restore, to a certain extent, the philosophical dignity of the renowned pedagogue, that is, the vindication of her thought beyond the Method application perspective. The emphasis is on examining the pedagogical work of Maria Montessori under a lens that amplifies the reflection of a life characterized by a properly feminine and feminist style in an Italy that, galloping between the old and the new century, saw the birth of a New emancipated Woman, able to confront the positivism of the macho monopoly of her time. Consequently, this philosopher, anthropologist, doctor, pedagogue and feminist —with the help of an important participation of women who marked her history— establishes a complete educational revolution in Italy, and later international impact.
