The Meaning of Freedom in the Education of the Child: Maria Montessori

Abstract/Notes: In this work an attempt has been made to study Montessori's life and educational activities. Her early educational environment and its effects are analysed and an attempt made to show how these influences produced in Montessori the germs of her educational theory regarding the freedom of the child. An attempt is made to show how the theory of the freedom of the child is congruent with the psychological theories which were popular at that time. The theoretical and practical application of the freedom of the child in its education is analysed in relation to the adult environment, the family and the school. An attempt is made to show how the Montessori material can lead the child to freedom and self discipline. It is shown that early child training in movement, which she entitled 'work', is a constant in her system. Montessori's theory that the child's intellect can be enhanced by providing educational materials which can lead to the child's ordering his mind at an early age has relevance to our age and the significance for contemporary practice in schooling is noted

Abstract/Notes: The Ontario Human Rights Commission's inquiry into how reading (an essential human right) is taught in Ontario schools revealed that Ontario’s public education system is “failing students...by not using evidence-based approaches to teach them to read.” This thesis aimed to address this failure by proposing Montessori language curriculum as a viable alternative to the current (ineffective) practices. The validity of both the new Ontario language curriculum and the Montessori language curriculum were assessed through the use of The Reading League’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines (CEG) and their associated workbook. The Ontario language curriculum was found to be lacking, particularly in terms of its lack of clarity, and guidance with regards to practical implementation. The Montessori language curriculum on the other hand was found to meet or surpass the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s recommendations, and in a way that can tangibly be understood and implemented. In light of these findings, Ontario school boards should seriously consider adopting Montessori language curriculum, in whole or in part, to address the systemic reading crisis. All educational stakeholders have a role to play in safeguarding children’s right to read.

Abstract/Notes: In the early months of 1939, Maria Montessori spent most of her time in the Netherlands. She had commissioned the manufacture of especially designed child-size furniture, and an Amsterdam store hosted the exhibition of this special furniture for a number of weeks. To help explain the philosophy behind the furniture Maria Montessori gave a talk at the store. Dr Montessori made a strong plea for family and school to truly and effectively collaborate, ensuring that both environments are complementary.
