Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori was a precursor of the human rights for children movement. From her work in medicine, psychiatry, hygiene, pedagogy, and anthropology she devised teaching methods that can be used at both ends of the age spectrum. Her philosophy is inherently respectful of the individual; her terminology sheds a positive and analytical perspective on Alzheimer behaviors. Montessori claimed that play was the child's work. For the Alzheimer patient, work has become play. When skills used in former roles are performed, however slowly and imperfectly the person with Alzheimer's is riveted and reassured Activities that merely resemble useful work increase concentration. Sweeping, washing, andkitchen tasks stirmuscle memory andsense ofworth. This paper will review Montessori principles andpractices and suggest many applications to cognitively-impaired elders. While some suggestions are more easily carried out when patients are getting daily care at home, others may be incorporated into adult day care and institutional programs.

Abstract/Notes: During the process of conceptualizing the school of which she is the founding principal, Denver Montessori Junior/Senior High School, Katy Myers' driving question was, "What exactly is Montessori high school?" Her answer to this question gets to the heart of the mission of many Montessori high schools. She concluded that her high school must be guided by the principle that "adolescence is the sensitive period for social justice." In presenting how her thinking developed from this point, Myers offers an essential understanding of the work, at both the junior and high school levels, that is centered around empowering adolescents with the tools they need to have the agency to make social change. Abstract/Notes: As with the other case studies in this journal, Ben Moudry and Andrew Christopherson present a vision of a Montessori high school that is focused on fostering the adolescent personality in connection to society. This chapter uses concrete examples of the key experiences and programs that provide the adolescents at The Grove School with this goal in mind. A list of desired outcomes for adolescents along with associated adolescent specific indicators is provided as these outcomes guide the work at The Grove School.
