Available from: University of Illinois - IDEALS
See More
Abstract/Notes: Central to this study is the Kankakee, Illinois School District 111 magnet school program, including a comparison of the magnet program to the regular or non-magnet curriculum program in Kankakee. Findings indicated that magnet students exhibited greater gains in some areas, including test results, as compared to their nonmagnet counterparts, supporting the idea that student, teacher, and parent choice of a learning environment has a direct impact on learning results.

Abstract/Notes: Margaret Naumburg was the charismatic and forceful founder of Waiden School in New York City. She went on to become an acknowledged leader in the “new school” movement, and later, the founder of art therapy in the United States. As art educator Judith Rubin says in her memorial tribute, “had she done nothing more than to found the Waiden School (1914), a place where freedom and discipline in all of the arts were fostered and were considered central to normal children’s healthy development… Dayenu! (‘It would have been enough!’).”1 This chapter examines Margaret Naumburgs life and times, her educational philosophy and its implementation in the Children’s School (Waiden School), and her leadership qualities and style.

Abstract/Notes: "Los Angeles, April 30 - With the intention of establishing four great Montessori schools in California, Dr. Maria Montessori, founder of the educational system that bears her name, today declared that Americas are more fitted for the word of advancing educational work than any other people. One of her schools will be in Pasadena, on in Los Angeles, one in San Diego, and the other in San Francisco. "Americans seem more interested in their young than do people of other countries," Madame Montessori declared, "and they are also more alert. It is for these reasons that they embrace and develop more quickly what is for the child's benefit. A child is born into the world good. What it develops of wrongdoing is taught it by adults. If left to follow its original instincts it would be and do only good.""
