Abstract/Notes: This article looks at the common ground between Montessorian and more traditional approaches to early childhood education. The author refers to ideas put forward by Dr E M Hallowell which suggest that early childhood educators focus on concepts such as playfulness, practice, mastery and reconnection; these concepts hold the key to raising children with healthy self-esteem, moral awareness and spiritual values. The author points out the similarities these psychological goals have with those a Montessori educator and a traditional early childhood educator aim for. She describes the approach taken at the Benevolent Society centre, which caters for babies and children up to five years. General Montessori principles are used, such as less is more -decluttering the children's personal space and giving them options for exploration; and spoken language - the process of interacting with children on a daily basis as the most fundamental step in building trusting relationships. The four vital areas of focus that keep re-appearing in any program written at the centre are cognitive development, fine motor development, gross motor development and social interaction. Abstract/Notes: It is essential to interpret information, determine its veracity, and assess its significance in today's society. Children need not acquire more information to be successful in the modern world; instead, they must develop higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). This study aims to establish whether or not children with a Montessori background have higher levels of HOTS than students with a non-Montessori background. The study analyzes data from a competency-based test in English, mathematics and science conducted for 78 fourth-grade students. It was discovered that the Montessori-educated children performed better in English and Science. Yet the difference in mathematics, where Montessori students scored higher, did not achieve much statistical significance.

Abstract/Notes: The development of self-care skills in children is a part of the Core curriculum for preschool education. The contents regarding formation of such skills include shaping hygiene practices, goodhabits and developing motor skills. Maria Montessori drew attention to the development of selfcare skills and functional independence. In her concept of preschool child education, Maria Montessori developed practical life activities which were intended to serve the development of specificskills and their application to everyday life. Therefore, the aim of the research was to identify thelevel of self-care skills in 4-year-old children attending selected kindergartens located in MińskMazowiecki and Siedlce. The research was conducted on 200 children from Non-public CreativeActivity Montessori Kindergarten ‘Zameczek’ in Siedlce, Non-public Montessori Kindergarten‘Delfinek’ in Mińsk Mazowiecki and 6 traditional kindergartens — 2 of which were located inMińsk Mazowiecki and 4 located in Siedlce. The obtained research results indicated a varied levelof self-care skills depending on kindergarten the children attended.
