Abstract/Notes: Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. This method based on observations and evaluations of a student’s development, which is a fundamental key of the Montessori Method. Color is one of the fundamental elements of art. It is important for art students to not only be exposed to color theory, but to understand it. By studying colors, students are able to embrace their own creativity and create their own masterpieces; one of the introductory art lessons is that of mixing colors and understanding the color wheel. The researcher chose this method to help beginning students grasp the concepts of color theory and color schemes to help them advance through the curriculum with new skills. Hence the research problem is to use general rules and concepts of Montessori to achieve a new method of color education to reform student’s knowledge, self-confidence, self-correction and their own abilities in using colors.

Abstract/Notes: In this article we attempt to explain how Spanish schoolteachers built their knowledge around Progressive Education and just how they assimilated these new teaching practices, a process we conceptualise as “appropriating the New”. Our source consists of the 287 files presented by state schoolteachers from all of Spain as part of their candidacy in the competitive exams held in 1932 for the position of school headteacher. These files, which contain the professional history of each of these teachers, elaborated by him or herself, allow us to analyse the discourses and practices developed and used in their classrooms. Drawing on these teachers’ accounts we have designed a typology with five different levels of appropriation of the ideas and practices of Progressive Education. These five categories are: 1.- Recognising the New; 2.- Understanding the New; 3.- Bonding with the New; 4.- Applying the New; 5.- Internalising the New. These levels, which represent the gradual implication of this sample of schoolteachers with the ideas of Progressive Education, bear witness to how their identification with these concepts led to a transformation of their teaching practices. We will then use this typology to study the appropriation of one of the best-known progressive ideas, i.e. self-government, which under the Second Republic of Spain in the 1930s acquired a particular political relevance.

Considering Social Equity in a New Public Management Reform: Evidence from Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Available from: Taylor and Francis Online

Publication: Public Integrity, vol. 23, no. 4

Pages: 369-384

Abstract/Notes: This article uses the case of independent charter schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to test whether New Public Management style reforms are compatible with the public administration pillar of social equity. Using three years of data, the author identifies inequities in access and outcomes due to the structural differences between charter and traditional public schools. Structural differences include governance, admissions, and transportation policies. Overall, independent charter schools serve fewer Black pupils, are less accessible, but do obtain comparatively better achievement scores. The article concludes with suggestions on how metagovernance can be used to ensure social equity in decentralized governance reforms. The study demonstrates how social equity can be analytically evaluated in a governance reform environment, and provides guidance on how structural barriers to social equity can be overcome in complex governing networks.
